Sophie's Choice: Woman Forced To Choose Between Saving Ill Son Or Abandoning Grandson

A desperate and poor family in China were forced to decide between saving their dying son or caring for their young grandchild.

The case has highlighted the incredible disparity between the nation's new rich and its incredibly poor.

Grandmother Liu Xiaoying, 57, was living on the breadline when her 30-year-old son Dusai was diagnosed with leukaemia.

The family used their meagre savings to pay for initial treatment but when that ran out Liu was forced to sacrifice one family member to save the other.

Consequently she tried to sell her grandson.

The family had used up over £9,000 in savings and borrowed another £20,000 for the medical fees to keep Dusai alive.

They needed a further £28,500 to fund a further operation that could save his life.

..

Police have told her if she tries again, she risks having the boy taken away, but her plight may have a happy ending. Local media said that several rich local businessmen were moved by her plight and are considering stumping up the cash to save her son.

A pure example of capitalist choice, if your poor you have no option but to make these types of decisions.

The irony that this type of choice is happening in a supposed communist state is quiet ironic.
