Bridge living: old viaducts could make new homes

http://innovation.uk.msn.com/tomorrow/bridge-living-old-viaducts-could-make-new-homes

The Italian authorities have been looking at ways to transform the disused viaducts and roads running across Scilla and Bagnara in the south of the country.

Built in the 1960s and 1970s, these dramatic bridges have been made redundant by newer highways and more modern transport links, and a group of architects have come up with an ingenious concept for making use of the decaying structures.

Samuel Nageotte, Tanguy Vermet, Philippe Rizzotti and Manal Rachdi have put together a detailed proposal to turn the disused bridges into 'inverted skyscrapers', tall stacks of lifestyle apartments linked by the connecting structure running above them.

With minimal damage to the surrounding environment, these buildings could be used to experiment with renewable technologies, foster a village-style community spirit and provide access to the valuable crops that grow alongside mountain crests.....

http://science.howstuffworks.com/transport/engines-equipment/jet-pack.htm

"The futureicon1.png is going to be pretty awesome. Each one of us will have our own personal jet pack. Instead of a long, slow daily commute, we'll zip straight to work at 100 mph, skimming along the tree tops. Family vacations will include jet pack trips to scenic locations unmarred by roads. Workers will use jet packs to complete work in high places....."

Where my ****ing jet pack.

"Wait … weren't we saying this about the future more than 50 years ago? "

This is just one of those cases of some architects coming up with some funky looking idea to try and get noticed, which in engineering terms wouldn't work, or at least would cost way too much money to put into practice!

Who would really want to live in one of those flats? Btw, Iove the picture of the man mowing his lawn on one of the levels. looks stupid for so many reasons!

We are not short of viaducts here in Yorkshire! Here is the impressive Lockwood viaduct. Whether you would want the Sheffield train trundling overhead is another matter.

Don't dismiss this idea too readily.

This is ideal secure accommodation for the Mad Max era when it arrives.

Easily defensive. Just build the lower properties high enough up, and/or add a body of water beneath. Then just two points of access to control.

It could be a very secure even potentially luxurious community. More secure than present day gated communities.

The uber rich may just latch on to this.

Some people can't even be mall pedestrians without colliding into others and never mind the road and car park users.

Jet packers sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen.
