interestrateripoff
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/wheat-rust-the-fungal-disease-that-threatens-to-destroy-the-world-crop-9271485.html Scientists are warning that wheat is facing a serious threat from a fungal disease that could wipe out the world’s crop if not quickly contained. Wheat rust, a devastating disease known as the “polio of agriculture”, has spread from Africa to South and Central Asia, the Middle East and Europe, with calamitous losses for the world’s second most important grain crop, after rice. There is mounting concern at the dangers posed to global food security. Experts have been aware of the threat since a major epidemic swept across North America’s wheat belt in the 1950s, destroying up to 40 per cent of the crop. Since then, tens of millions of pounds have been invested in developing rust-resistant varieties of the grain. However, an outbreak in Uganda in 1999 was discovered to have been caused by a virulent mutation of the fungus. There has been alarm at the speed at which further mutations have subsequently developed and spread across continents. Plant scientists in Britain estimate the latest developments mean that 90 per cent of all current African wheat varieties are now vulnerable to the disease. This can only do wonders for food prices. It only seems a matter of time before humanity faces an epic crisis either relating to food or a pandemic.
DabHand
Ah trying to scare Europe into greater adoption of GMO. Course rust et al wouldn't be so successful if we didn't farm monocultures of narrow genetic variations.

Guest TheBlueCat
Ooh, reminds me of the Death of Grass. A great sci-fi book for those into post-apocalyptic scenarios.
Frank Hovis
Yes it's another scare story to get you to think GM food is ok. As long as it's not touching barley that's fine, I can live without weissbeer for a year.

chronyx
Wheat is barely food anyway. Put it all back to grazing or diverse arable crop production land and use insects for efficient protein production.....(Half said in jest but got to be more sustainable than modern agriculture)
montesquieu
Modern denatured wheat varieties are pretty bad for the body anyway. There are plenty of substitutes.

Yes this is good! city comodity traders will make a killing on this one and will increase GDP growth leading to a happier and richer economy. (not my sentiment but beleive me, in the background this will be another tick in the 'City of London generates all wealth in UK' tripe.) Shows you how sick 'They' are.
