The Sophistication Of Teargetted Online Ads

Recommended Posts

We had a thread on here (or maybe a post, I forget) about a guy who was wondering why he was seeing ads for young asian dating, or somesuch.

Anyways, I'm starting to come to the conclusion that online advertising is now much more sophisticated than just tracking cookies. two things have happened recently that have led me to this conclusion:

1. My wife searched on her phone for Longines watches, and the next thing I know i'm getting facebook ads for Longines.

2. I followed my (google) satnav yesterday to a national trust site in Yorkshire. Guess what ads my wife is getting today? National trust membership.

Not sure I like this. I preferred it when if you kept your cookies clean your wife would never know what you'd been looking for, or at. Now I know that if I find myself seeing adverts for asian babes, or BBC dating my wife might be up to something :D

I googled for a pale blue Barbour for the fishing season. I don't 'like' Barbours fb page and I didn't post on face book about it. Within hours I had Barbour ads for blue jackets on my fb page. My find a friend list consisted of fishing equipment shops. Before I realised what had actually happened I thought face book was reading my mind! Errie stuff.

Nothing sophisticated about it, its obviously just looking for certain words/search terms. It's hardly mind reading is it?

The OP's example is quite worrying IMO, a lot of stuff that you wouldn't expect to be related back to you, such as his wife searching for watches on her phone.

Do you keep your cookies clean? Every time I shut down my browser I clear all cookies. I also run ghostery. I never see ads for stuff I've previously searched for (goatse for example :-).

My experience is that it is all down to cookies and advertising networks. If you go to the Guardian home page the following 3rd parties are putting cookies into your browser:

Audience Science
ChartBeat
Criteo
DoubleClick
Facebook Connect
ForeSee
Google Adsense
Google AdWords Conversion
Google AJAX Search API
MediaMath
NetRatings SiteCensus
Omniture (Adobe Analytics)
Optimizely
National Security Agency
Outbrain Widgets
Quantcast Advertising
ScoreCard Research
Twitter Button

This from the tinfoil hat wearing Graun who worry about the NSA.

If she was searching via the house wifi would that explain it? Searching by ISP rather than cookies as Riedquat suggested.

I even use ghostery on iPad and phone. I daren't think what I'd get ads for if I didn't. Any suggestions? ;)

Whips and coconut macaroons? Both with jam.

Contextual online advertising has come along way since 'gay bear dating' adverts were shown on HPC!

Aye, and the women's shoes too! I'd never get those in a size 11!

its all that porn you watch...a predication for asian ladies..porn sites are the worst for tracking..(so I`ve been told)

This article suggests you have been told right.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/thinking-man/10619206/Porn-users-dont-realise-they-are-being-watched.html

Every single porn user is being used, manipulated and watched. It is this feeling that I was no longer in control that put me off porn forever. We are all of us mere pawns in the hyper-capitalised world of porn.

I noticed recently too, that I was getting targetted ads for stuff I had recently be searching.

One thing that annoys me is, I don't have a good internet connection, and often when a forum page fails to load, i can click on the "stop" button, and then it loads, and I suspect that it is because it was waiting for the ads. I'd like to know what it's costing me in data transmission costs (and can I reclaim it from somebody).
