Saudi Arabia To Begin Building World’S Tallest Skyscraper - 1Km Tall

Recommended Posts

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/saudiarabia/10775194/Saudi-Arabia-to-begin-building-worlds-tallest-skyscraper.html

Saudi Arabia is scheduled to begin building the world’s tallest tower next week, which will soar 1km in to the sky when completed.

The Kingdom Tower in the coastal city of Jeddah will measure 3,280 feet (1km), some 568 feet (173 meters) taller than the current Guinness world record holder, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,716 feet (827 metres).

At an estimated cost of $1.23bn, the tower in Saudi will require approximately 5.7 million square feet of concrete, 80,000 tonnes of steel for its 200 floors and will take five years to complete, according to The Saudi Gazette.

The tower, overlooking the Red Sea, will feature a five-star Four Seasons hotel, apartments, office space and an observatory.

Looks like the skyscraper index is going to go even higher!

If they get it built it will certainly be an impressive piece of engineering.

I'm imagining it in fifty years time after the oil has run out, with the first couple of floors buried under the sand, and no-one living above the tenth floor because there's no power for the elevators. Would probably look pretty cool on a 1970s rock album cover by then.

It is a dick waving contest with the other gulf states. You probably could house everyone in Saudi, plus their camels and hawks, in there.

Interesting from a security POV - if you fear being atracked on the grpund then get up into the air. Handy helio pad two thirds up for emergency evac?

There are precisely 28,287,855 people in Arabia.

There used to be 10 billion bicycles in Beijing.

Where do they plan on putting all the sewage?

State of the art sewage system but best not break as you could probably kill someone if you took a shit out of the window.
