Second Homes Could Be Hit With Doubled Council Tax Rates As Welsh Government Confirms It Will Allow Councils To Levy 'premium Rate'

Recommended Posts

Housing Minister Carl Sargeant said the government had tabled an amendment to the Housing (Wales) Bill which would give a discretionary power to charge a “premium” higher rate of council tax of up to 100% on second homes.

He said the government was acting because of the impact second homes may have on housing supply “at a time when so many individuals and families struggle to attain a home of their own”.

Councils could apply a premium up to a level double the normal rate, but will be up to authorities what level it would apply.

On one hand I cant see a few grand being a big deal to someone with enough money to buy a second home for a six figure sum; on the other people spend thousands to save a hundred quid on car taxes so perhaps writing the cheque out every year will encourage a few to sell up.

Aaaah, but they only paid £30k for the house back in the 90's and not the council want £3k per year in council tax.

Feel free to shoot me down but in some circumstances I feel people need two homes. For example a week day flat then a family home to keep the wife and kids in.

It's the repressive planning system & NIMBY's that's the problem.

I have ten homes. 9 Surrounding my main home as I am the ultimate NIMBY. The 10 lots of council tax bills are well worth it.
