crashmonitor
It goes right to the top, Ed. Milliband is only one of a handful of MPs that would be hit by the mansion tax. His constant whining about the Bulligdon boys is hypocritical when he is really one of the club.

wonderpup
Not as hypocritical in my view as condemning people in social housing for having too many bedrooms while using taxpayer money to allow people to buy any number of bedrooms via 'Help to Buy'. I saw a couple on tv last night who used Help to Buy to purchase a five bedroom house- for the two of them. That's four spare bedrooms. I saw a couple on tv last night who used Help to Buy to purchase a five bedroom house- for the two of them. That's four spare bedrooms. Saw this too. Pleased with themselves that they wouldn't have to slum it in a 2-up, 2-down starter home. The sense of entitlement is everywhere. Of course, in five years they will have a short-term headache over the govt 'help,' and then 25 years is a long time and anything can happen in life. Rarely is it all roses. Bad stuff happens. EU MP's can do what they like and because we don't know who they are they will never be exposed. An excellent, wonderful expose of Meacher. I laughed, but really, I should have cried. Unlike you, I never voted Liebour - I was a long-term Lib Dem and certainly voted for them back in 2001 when the video was made. But I did have a sneaking admiration for Meacher because, among other things, he didn't seem afraid to speak his mind and even wrote the foreword to a 9/11 book by David Ray Griffin - The New Pearl Harbor. But as the thread title indicates, he's just a stinking hypocrite, like most of the Labour and Lib Dem political class.
billybong
It's amazing that he's is still an MP with enough people voting for him despite the issue of his extensive property ownership being revealed way back in 2001. There can't be much competition for the seat. http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Meacher Edited March 29, 2014 by billybong

gf3
After a bit of thinking about it. I don't blame him for becoming a BTL LL. It's the fact that he doesn't come clean about it that's the problem. If the government said they were going to give everybody in the county £10,000 and you thought it was a bad idea. would you be a hypocrite taking the money. The problem also comes if he votes for things that make him rich rather than voting for a fairer society. I could be called a hypocrite I didn't agree with the sell off of royal mail. However I still made about £600 buying shares. I don't feel bad about buy the shares because it was going to happen whether I bought them or not. You have to be very rich to stand on the morel high ground. Edited March 29, 2014 by gf3

If so you are a better man than me gunga din Not getting into BTL could be seen as cutting your nose off to spite you face. One can never be sure about one's actions in a hypothetical situation of course, but if I was in a well-paid job with a good pension, why would I want this 'free money?' compare with now. I have far less than Meacher for my salary and my pension arrangements are far less generous. But if I had to ditch all my principles just to get this free money I don't know if I would. The well-off are different from us. It seems that the more they have, the more they want, and for the life of me, I have never understood that mentality. Of course, it may be that i am psychologically disturbed. I don't consider myself a better person than you btw.

The market equivalent of Dexter (code), is coming for many of them now... stalking along. See West Brom ect. Some of them will end up with no properties, including that woman on BBC News who used to have a £4m portfolio and now renting.

But if I went to bed tonight and Mysteriously woke up in 1995 I would try and make out like a bandit. However I think the way we are taxed on our Labour compared to the way we are taxed on rent seeking is wrong. I hope to use up all my £10,900 capital gains allowance next financial year and by using the £15,000 ISA allowance that will give me nearly £26,000 tax free. Just so wrong on every level. There's got to be numerous things you could go back and invest in to outperform HPI gains. How about Apple, not that it's my personal scene as a company, and stuff. How about Brent Crude at $16-$18 a barrel. Seems to me you have less trust in money, and are prone to being infected with current malinvestment thinking - that tangible assets are the bestest. Like many others still paying stupid prices for the privilege of owning bricks-n-mortar. Where I believe financial assets will prevail over mental HPI. Not to mention the principle of the thing - and I don't believe many landlord excuses.
billybong
The video was made in 2001 just 4 years after the 1997 general election which was partly won on no more boom and bust along with no more out of control housing market. That just doesn't fit in with him being so much into BTL and other property. It's that contradiction in interests with a politician in a position to influence stated policy that's the dodgy bit (then there's his writings about housing which would help to win support within the general Labour party and for sure bits would have been broadcast in the media over time to help to gain constituency votes during elections). If he wanted to profit from property/BTL then he should have been a property developer/landlord and stayed out of parliament - and kept away from MPs etc. That applies to the rest of them as well.
