Libya decided to rehabilitate Tuesday the family of the late king Idriss, who was overthrown by Muammar Gaddafi, himself toppled and killed in a 2011 uprising after four decades in power.

A decree issued by the government stipulates that the heirs of Idriss Al Sanussi will regain their Libyan nationality and recover property confiscated by Gaddafi.

Idriss, who became king in 1951 after Libya was the first North African country to gain independence, was overthrown in 1969.

Following the coup, the royal family was held under house arrest, its members stripped of their nationality and their property and assets seized. The family was later expelled from the country.

Idriss sought refuge in Cairo, where he lived until his death in 1983 at the age of 94.

The rest of the family obtained political exile status in Britain, including Idriss’ grand nephew and heir apparent, Mohammad Al Sanussi.

How many sweetheart deals are the western energy bandits going to get for installing this muppet family back into power?

Yet another nation destroyed for oil. Yay.

Nothing wrong with a monarchy. Most people are still religious in some degree, need a figurehead.

So long as it comes with a constitution that restricts the exercise of power. Something we're losing in the UK with an overmighty executive.

All forms of military and geopolitical action seems to get tainted by association with the hubristic march into Bagdad and the West not militarily intervening in Libya right away gave the Gaddafi regime more breathing room to dig in and get out heavier firepower. A lesser evil in this case and not mostly of our own making. And of course we're doing deals with the new regime - we did greedy oil deals with Gaddafi at the gross expense of his political enemies and the Lockerbie victims.
