@contradevian
Being promoted as a social cleansing of London story, but then again the long term residents did sell their secure tenancies for £1M http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/exclusive-the-dukes-lodge-the-apartment-block-the-candy-brothers-and-another-chapter-in-the-expulsion-of-londoners-9164054.html The money bought out their old protected tenancy rights, turning all the residents into short-term renters who could be told to vacate their homes at relatively short notice. You mean just like how millions of other tenants are forced to live in Rentier Britain? Difficult to feel much sympathy, even if the block gets knocked down and redeveloped for absentee oligarchs. Difficult to feel much sympathy, even if the block gets knocked down and redeveloped for absentee oligarchs. 12 long term residents were each paid an average of £1m for their protected tenancies. Something about cake and eating it comes to mind... However I don't see why councils can't prevent oligarch-isation to some extent by stipulating via PP that the end product properties must not cost more than is already reasonable for the area. They would still not be remotely cheap but it might prevent the billionaire excesses so beloved of the Candy brothers.

@contradevian
Aha! A measure of the value of a secure tenancy. No wonder people who could only dream of any such asset resent the taxes that fund such privilege. The going rate for a Council tenancy is about £10k so don't get too wind up about it. I'd say the State has been very well remunerated (selling to the Candy brothers assuming it wasn't a private residential block). Heaven forbid the surfs should get a share (even if they are having a cake and eat it, moment). bonse
the high street has been sold down the tubes by councils granting planning to out of town shopping centres. central london will be empty before too long, the west end will be like the city of london from 7pm to 7am. nothing will be done about it until it is too late.
