Tenancies Are For The Mindless

Recommended Posts

BBC's "most popular" headlines this morning include this: "Tenants 'ripped off' by letting agents who keep deposits". The contents will come as no surprise to HPCers.

Following the link, it's a Radio 1 page. OK, not quite the Beeb's true Monument to Total Mindlessness Radio 2, but still somewhere (like the Daily Wail when it features here @HPC) that makes me feel a little dirty for having visited.

Or is it that renting in the private sector is more prevalent amongst Radio 1's audience

Heads up. This is report is being shown on BBC Breakfast at 7.20am this morning.

Terrible state of affairs, little protection for tenants and nobody interested in stopping the fraudsters, so free to do more damage and theft...the authorities are looking like they care little about renters and those with the least, little regulation or penalty only means more deception and loss. :(

That's precisely the suggestion that makes me feel soiled. Private renters are supposed to be those who work hard but lack one or both of capital or stability. I suppose it's the strange BBC creed about a strong correlation between low age and low intelligence.

Police not interested. Fraud is a civil matter!

Actually, no. Fraud is a criminal offence - if you can realistically argue that a lettings agency has defrauded you. Fraud is not a civil matter. But the police are unlikely to accept that the behaviour of a lettings agency does amount to fraud, rather than just being a minor dispute about money that doesn't meet the definition of fraud.
