Government Plans To Make Evicting Tenants Easier

Recommended Posts

It only seems that it will become quicker to evict if tenants don't pay rent, or commit serious breaches like subletting. ANy decent tenant paying their rent on time is not going to suffer at all by any new rules.

Pfft. They knew, or should have known, the law and commercial risks before becoming landlords.

If they don't like it, go do something else for a living.

Some of my solicitor contacts who act for landlords in messy cases won't like plans to make it even easier to evict. Less in fees for them.

South London landlord Stuart Williams says a government law change can’t come a moment too soon.

... Williams told me: “landlords aren’t fat cats with thousands of properties – they usually have one or two properties that they rent out, with their life savings invested in the property that they rent out to hopefully make a little bit of money.”

Doesn't look like the DCLG is considering easier evictions - their consultation paper is all about increased regulation of the rented sector.

Don't know where Ch4 got that one from.

There was an interview after the piece on the news, featuring among others Fergus Wilson, looking as grumpy and unlovable as ever. Some faceless tory MP (can't remember name) kept banging on about how whatever policy around renting that seems to be being cooked up in government at the moment would have to be "give-and-take" between landlords and renters - ie renters would have to give up some of their rights in return for better security. I sense something nasty coming...
