I like the quote : "If you have done the sums and can afford it fairly comfortably, then you should do it, instead of trying to be clever by holding off"

Marvellous quote. Melanie Bien was/is (?) personal finance editor of the Independent on Sunday so she really has the full VI credentials. She also doesn't look quite old enough to remember 1988 except that maybe she got a nice bike for Christmas that year.

I would like that quote more if there was also a quote along the lines of 'If you have done the sums and can't afford it fairly confortably (I.e. by using traditional measures of "comfort"), then you shouldn't do it, instead of trying to be clever by using fancy financing'.
