Some 19,000 individuals work for the council in a wide variety of occupations, includingincluding social workers, building surveyors, teachers, catering assistants, architects, personnel advisors, policy officers, craft and manual operatives, solicitors, youth workers, finance officers, research assistants cleaners and web designers. Whatever the job, Manchester City council has the experts on its payroll. We are the largest employer in Manchester.
spyguy
And what services do they provide? Years ago councils used to loads - water, gas. These days, its mainly running around after scum and doing stuff the scum cannot be ar5ed to do.

It's OK - they'll be taken over by Serco or Capita, still be paid for 100% from taxation, and you can then pretend they are private sector jobs. It is fairly obvious that the main employers will be public sector in terms of single employers. An NHS hospital requires thousands of staff to be employed by one employer. A thousand small businesses in a city will might only account for 3 staff each.
@contradevian
Greater Manchester has a population of 2.19M though. Where I live the Council, NHS Trust and HE are the biggest employers, after that its supermarkets. What do you expect after the collapse of big manufacturing? R K
It would be astonishing if a single private sector company in a city centre employed 19,000 people unless perhaps it was RBS or HSBC in London. 19,000 doesn't sound much for a council in the 2nd largest City in the country, < 5% of population. Doubt their wages are anywhere near those of RBS or HSBC.

It's only second largest if you include Greater Manchester so it's way more than 19K as you will have to include workers for Salford, Trafford,Tameside,Bury,Oldham councils etc. The populations for each council are listed below, approx 2.1m http://www.agma.gov.uk/greater-manchester-prepared/contact-us/local-authorities2/ Edited February 15, 2014 by UnsureFTB
interestrateripoff
Does this include employees who work for sub-contractors providing council services? Some services like care support gets contracted out.
MARTINX9
You will probably find that nearly half of these are teachers - there are 100,000 kids in the Manchester city council area and it has the worst levels of child poverty in the UK. So that means more call on social care too! Not defending it entirely - but the speculation is that there will be 40% job cuts for those public sector workers outside the NHS and schools over the next 5 years. So its hardly a job for life anymore.

Andy T
Didn't they have major job cuts after 2007? So if they employ 19,000 now, what was it before? 25,000?

Carless Whisper
Its been obvious for a while now that in the future the only jobs will be public sector and retail. Governments have encouraged jobs to be sent abroad and have even agreed to pick up the bill for the destruction it causes through benefits/tax credits and employing people in non-jobs in the public sector. Strangely noone bothers to mention this on question time, all we hear about is 'growth' - another 1984 style buzzword where noone actually knows what it means but somehow has positive connotations and is therefore obviously good. SarahBell
Is there a list for every council in the UK? I think Oldham employs 2897 people... in 2008: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/7624464.stm The authority is Oldham's biggest employer with nearly 5,000 staff Oldham's estimated population is 225,200 (2012). http://www.oldham.gov.uk/info/200888/background_information/1262/oldham_statistics In the 2010 Indices of Deprivation, Oldham was ranked as the 37th most deprived local authority (of 326). Oldham ranks 25th on concentration of deprivation, highlighting the relatively high levels of inequality within the borough. Three areas in Oldham are in the 1% most deprived in England, with 18 in the 5% most deprived. About half the population of Manchester http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester Manchester (local /ˈmæntʃɪstə/)[4] is a city and metropolitan borough in North West England with an estimated population of 512,000. And with a tiny % of staff. Do we assume Oldham has out sourced more staff? Or that Manchester is just lousy with employees?
