Britain Now More Unequal Than Pakistan & India

Recommended Posts

Hi there

Interesting statistics on inequality from the latest UNDP Human Development Report.

Britain now has a higher Gini Index (at 36.0) than Pakistan (33.0) and India (32.5)

http://hdr.undp.org/statistics/data/indica...m?x=148&y=3&z=2

A value of 0 represents perfect equality, a value of 100 perfect inequality.

Given that both India and Pakistan have pockets of extreme poverty and fairly healthy remaining feudal structures in rural areas combined with major pockets of hyper wealth created by business and political and military elites I think this is fairly good going.

Go new labour! Who says that Jerusalum building project isn't going to plan.

That's quite interesting. I personally think we should judge a Labour government on the gap between rich and poor. Just as we judged the Conservatives in the 80s on their commitment to free market economics. What else can we judge a Labour government on?

The increasing gap between rich and poor in this country is in my opinion New Labour's greatest failure.

Interesting to see that Australia rates only 3.

When Eastenders and Emmerdale are wiped off the screen due to power cuts and the central heating goes, maybe they'll sit shivering in the dark, wondering what on earth went wrong.

Don't expect any actual thinking right away though, the "Great British Public" is a tad out of practice at that kind of mental effort.

If this data can be backed up and proved - it should be locked on the HPC 'front page' and 'stickied' FOREVER!

And you lazy hacks out there - I want to read some well researched articles about this!

You are looking at the HDI index. Australia is 3rd, UK is 15th. The GINI for Australia is 35.2

And here's an example why:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtm...25/cncrud25.xml

I don't really have a problem with people being rewarded for good performance - but isn't this just greed? I mean is 10 million pounds a year not enough? IMO if you don't feel that you can have a very nice life on 10 million quid a year, there's something wrong with you.

I'll be when one of the support staff of his company sits in his/her annual review it's "well we have to keep costs down you know so we're offering you a 2.5% increase this year"!

I am not a Labour supporter but why not judge them on absolute rather than relative poverty? Is being poor in this country but in most cases still housed, fed, washed, heated, possessing DVD players, PC etc really the same as being poor in Pakistan or India. I have seen both and they do not look the same to me. Most of Britain's poor would look like kings to India's poor, often washing themselves in open sewers (one of my first eye openers in Mumbai). My local tube beggar pulled out a mobile phone last week when he thought no one was looking...

you arent suggesting business and political and military elites have any power in the UK ?

if that were the case we would have gone to war 4 times in the last 7 years and currently be threatening another country with war.

we would also have seen massive increases in corporate profits at companies such as Shell and BP ( 10 billion plus each)

you sir are a mad conspiracy theorist and i claim my free mobile chemical weapons plant.

Indeed. A true tragedy... and under a supposedly socialist government.

:(

LL

what is the score for China which is a socialist govt

it looks to me like 44.7 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it seems all countries are heading for the same model of authoritarian , militaristic regimes with vast disparities in wealth.

wether they call themselves left or right is increasingly irrelevant,

You seem to have about as much time as me to post this morning. Out of interest, what sort of work do you do? Are you an academic?

I am a self-employed layabout.

Im taking a container of computers over to Spain next month.

I never made it as an academic because I chose Mathematics and was rotten at it..

Should have stuck with something I was good at like History or Chemistry,
