EDL founder Tommy Robinson jailed for mortgage fraud

Former leader of English Defence League tweets of 'stitch-up' after he is sentenced to 18 months in jail

The English Defence League (EDL) founder Tommy Robinson has been jailed for 18 months for mortgage fraud.

The 31-year-old, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, had previously admitted two counts of the offence at a hearing in November.

In an apparent comment on the sentencing at St Albans crown court, the controversial far-right figure took to Twitter to say: "This is a complete stitch-up."

"Robinson was accused of conspiring with others to obtain a mortgage by misrepresentation from the Abbey and Halifax banks" What Liar loan with a tame broker? BTL mortgage for non BTL, borrowed deposit on credit? I expect there's one under every stone.

TPTB would have been crawling up his *rse to find anything at all with which to make him go away. More extreme views like the EDL are blowback from marginalising inconvenient debate. As a great man once said if you make peaceful protest impossible, you make violent revolution inevitable.

Bloody hell, he is the first to be done for this. Isn't there some scottish bloke who damaged a bank living it in large in france on a million pound state pension. So whats the moral of this story, something like financial crime is punished according to your political allegiance.

I think that is exactly what it is.

He has previous on deception - used someone else's passport.

The story of him going to the US on someone else's passport, being taken off for secondary screening then legging it out of the room and escaping from the airport is pretty funny. It also tells what an absolute nut case the guy is - people have been shot for way less than that in the states.

Agreed that this doesn't sound like an exactly impartial prosecution though, if everyone who'd committed mortgage fraud in the UK in the last 15 years was in prison, there would be more people on the inside than the out.

No one gets done for mortgage fraud in this country. If they were we would still have prison hulks, stretching down the Thames to Kent as in Dickensian times,

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

I know someone else who got sent down for this. The initial investigation was triggered by a completely unrelated case which didn't get very far but they eventually got them on mortgage fraud. I wouldn't be surprised if this is standard procedure as they know they can practically nab anyone who bought a property or two in the past decade, at a time of their choosing. Anyway I'm not fussed how they catch them as long they send down the b'strds. This isn't a victimless crime. The victims are us, sat right here!

In the same way that the US cops will always throw in a tax evasion charge or two when prosecuting any kind of white collar crime. US tax laws are so complex that just about everyone is guilty of something whether they know it or not.

Shouldn't it be first they came for the EDL and I did not speak out?

As Mandelson shows if you are a socialist in the UK they won't come for you even if you forget to mention a large loan on your mortgage application or avoid stamp duty.

I sometimes wonder how many people couldn't be send to gaol if the authorities needed to badly enough. There are all sorts of strict liability offences out there nowadays. They don't need to prove intent for lots of serious crimes: terrorism, tax, health and safety and so on. It's long been the tactic used by power in less developed regions of the world.

Still, I don't know what people are worried about. All you need to do is keep your head down and let the authorities do the thinking for you. What could possibly go wrong?
