The 30 Year Rule Screws Us

Recommended Posts

Do you think politicians would make better decisions if all the decisions made for the UK were in the public domain from day 1?

Why should we wait another 20+ years to discover the secrets of the Blair and Brown years?

It's a nice idea. But unfortunately, I can think of plenty of decisions that senior politicians might have to take that should be kept secret at least for a while. For example, you wouldn't want any strategy or tactical information being in the public domain during a national security problem. Equally, you might even want to keep any hard won learnings under lock and key so they would still have value in the future.

The difficulty is where you draw the line.

For all of it's faults, the Freedom of Information Act is one way of bridging the divide between access to everything and the 30 year rule. I think the MP expenses scandal, for example, was the result of a FOI request which was only partly successfully contested - and then some kind soul leaked the lot anyhow.

i think equally stupid self interested decisons for the UK would be made if the UK became a democracy, but thered be less corruption and therefore the equally stupid self interested decisions would have less damage on the majority
