Russian Warship Detected 30 Miles Away From Scotland

Recommended Posts

Battle stations! Navy scrambles destroyer to challenge Russian warship off British coast (but it takes 24 hours to make 600-mile journey from Portsmouth base - was Putin testing our response time?)

Russian vessel detected 30 miles away from Scotland last night

Only ship available to respond was on south coast of England

Tensions heightened when aerial photos showed ship full of missiles

4 January 2014

A fully armed Royal Navy warship was scrambled to challenge a missile-carrying Russian vessel in the waters off Britain just days before Christmas, defence sources revealed last night.

In a calculated test of Britain's reduced naval capacity in the North Sea, the Russian warship came within 30 miles of the coast.

It was detected nearing Scotland, but the only ship the Royal Navy had available to respond after Ministry of Defence cuts was in Portsmouth, resulting in a delay of 24 hours until it was in position.

The threatening approach towards Britain's territorial waters triggered a top-secret Navy and Air Force operation co-ordinated by the military top brass at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) bunker at Northwood, just outside London.

RAF reconnaissance aircraft tracked the progress of the Russian warship as it neared north-east Scotland, and the tension heightened when aerial photographs revealed the ship was carrying a full payload of guided missiles.

Commanders at PJHQ decided to send the new Type 45 destroyer HMS Defender, which is Britain's immediate-response ship during a national security crisis.

The Russian ship waited in the Moray Forth, a stretch of water that flows into Loch Ness, for Defender to arrive, as if her captain were recording the Navy's response times.

At the time, Defender was in dock at Portsmouth. Her crew were forced to make the 600-mile journey around the coastline, because budget cutbacks mean there are no maritime patrol vessels sailing off Scotland.

Don't the pesky Russians realise we're very busy putting everything into trying to get younger people, including so smart young Estate Agents who've just separated from their husbands and must be entitled to a new home for a new life, take bigger mortgages to make house prices go up? Outbidding others who are better positioned to buy, but unwilling to meet high asking prices.

It's so economically productive, over allowing rebalancing, keeping finance people in super high paying jobs, keeping zombie firms alive, and sapping young people from having money for anything else, including new business start-ups.

As well know, Russian bombers/fighters said to have been coming into our airspace since 2007. http://www.dailymail...h-airspace.html

Our political elite have sold out the country. Its like e everyone educated at Oxford or Cambridge is a traitor.

The navy built this nations wealth and the bankers took it.

I doubt the square mile would be willing to foot the defence bill.

We don't need the Navy to defend us at those sorts of ranges, just send some ground attack Tornados and it'll be goodnight Russian ship. It would be a lot quicker than 24 hours too.

'scramble' is not really the right adjective for a boat is it? More a leisurely cruise to one's destination.

The waiting...thats the worst part.

so the Russians, are "testing" for a response...like they dont know where every ship and sub and Aircraft we have is at any given time..its a bit like Ferdinand is being tested by the Russian centre forward....only its not really like that at all, except in the mind of a Daily Mail Reader.

The Russians should wait the outcome of the referendum before invading Scotland.

Half a ton of herring, will certainly get Putin's Navy to shit themselves!

It would almost be just as quick to send the Victory up. At least it would give the Russians something historical to look at.

For perspective, Russian aircraft did a dummy "bomb run" towards Sweden a few weeks back. They flew towards Gotland (big island southeast of Stockholm) and started a run towards the equivalent of the NSA in Sweden.

Russia showing its muscles.

If you did, do you think your far enough away not to have your skin peel after it?

Given the reaction time, they could have sailed up the Thames and shelled Westminster.... except they couldn't..... because it's adequately defended.

Petro-state.

More than that.

Russia is the world’s richest country when it comes to natural resources. It leads all other nations in the size of both its natural gas and timber reserves and Lake Baikal has 80%+ of all the fresh water on the planet. Russia alsp has the world’s second-largest deposits of coal and the third-largest deposits of gold. Additionally, it has the second-largest estimated deposits of rare earth minerals.
