Peter O'toole, Star Of Lawrence Of Arabia, Dies Aged 81

Recommended Posts

No disrespect intended but... he was an engaging actor and I've enjoyed pretty much all of his on-screen time. However, he was one of those charismatic actors who I recall as being good but who didn't appear in all that many good films when I try to think of some.

The Ruling Class is genius though...

Watch this entrance , pure genius. Not sure this would pass the compliance police today.......

Great storyteller. Neve, O'Toole are a dying breed:

Brilliant.

There is a book called 'Hellraisers' about O'Toole, Harris, Burton and Reed. Makes you realise how bland modern actors are.

Drink and sheeple are a terrible thing. Letterman is up for debate, is he drunk or is he deliberatekly winding the shiple?

The camel seemed very happy, though I think would have preferred a Leffe.. :)

Poor boy from Leeds. Most northern cities to this day have areas occupied by Irish emigrants from the famine I guess.

Edit: wasn't his greatest film ' Caligula'?

'My Favourite Year' and 'Lord Jim' were excellent as was 'The Lion In Winter'. I have never liked 'Murphy's War'.

He made surprisingly few films.

LOA was a masterpiece though.

I think Caligula was the low point for many stars tbh. Gielgud, Mirren, McDowell, O'Toole...hang your heads in shame :-)

The 70s were a bit desperate for Cinema and by the time we got to 'Caligua' the film IMPO was representing the economic malaise of the UK as much as the Cinematic one. It was soft porn basically.

Thankfully, the Cinema was saved in the 70s by that new breed coming through - Speilberg, Coppolla, Scorsese and Lucas.

I presume you were watching the cut version of Caligula? I wouldn't call the uncut version 'soft' porn.

One of my favourite actors. Sad to see him go.

Always loved How to Steal a Million. Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell is lots of fun. Venus was surprisingly good.

He allegedly turned down a knighthood which gets a thumbs up from me.
