Unable To Log On On To Laptop - This May Help

Recommended Posts

Last week I was unable to log on to my personal laptop, it accepted the password but then said I had an invalid id so I couldn't get in.

I had vague memories of Function keys doing something so I hammered each of those in turn on start up until I got something like an admin menu. I think it was repeated F8s that got it.

Anyway within this menu was an option to revert to a previous restore point; I selected this and it whirred away for a while. Whereupon back to normal. This is the only time in nearly 30 years (I know ) of using computers that this has happened.

Anyway if you find yourself in a similar position this worked, no need to turn to premium helplines or visit Dixons (if that's still going).

I think its called safe start mode ?

No, it's getting into the system menus. Any start mode would have been ok but because it was not recognising my id and saying it was invalid when I tried to log on I couldn't get into windows to do anything in the first place.

I'm not claiming to be an expert here, but somebody must have told me this way back as a way of dealing with being unable to log-in and I'm passing it on, if you don't know this you're stuck as you can't get anywhere.

It was clearly caused by something in the latest windows upgrade being applied as going back to the previous restore point made my log-in valid again. So as it's a recent update others may have the same problem.
