Christmas may be the season for a festive spending spree, but Britain's cash-conscious households have restrained their annual festive blowout in the face of recession and austerity, according to a new analysis by the Office for National Statistics.

As retailers pin their hopes on a last-minute surge in spending over the next couple of weeks, the ONS revealed that in real terms, Christmas spending in the average household was no higher last year than in 2006.

"Household expenditure in volume terms during Q4 2012 was at broadly the same level as in Q4 2006, reflecting changing household circumstances, including the relatively weak growth of real households' disposable income over this period," the ONS said in its latest economic review.

Wages have consistently grown more slowly than prices over recent years, and resorting to a more frugal Christmas is one way households have managed to make ends meet.

Better get to Wonga to get a loan.

Don't we have this every year, then every year it all comes good after the big day?

Yep, I tried looking for all the threads that have been on it via google but couldn't find them. I know I've posted several over the years about sales down and then in the new year it's record sales champers all round....

Thank goodness for the estate agency 'profession' ramping up asking prices in this deflating economy. The economy is falling apart but thanks to them and the Daily Express everything is OK.

Its them buying all that photographic equipment...

Shops may be forced into more price-cutting and promotions because of growing uncertainties about Christmas trading, economists have warned

Industry data are providing mixed indicators about Christmas trading so far. Barclaycard, which processes almost half of all UK credit and debit business, reported a 3pc rise in consumer spending in November, the best of the year.

But it said that shoppers were being “savvy”: the number of transactions rose 6.5pc last month, yet the average amount for each transaction was down 3.3pc. Online spending accounted for 21pc of sales, up 1pc on a year ago.

Traders getting nervous...

The Daily Express is doing its absolute best to ramp up the bad weather forecasts every day to boost spending on anti freeze, winter clothing and turn the thermostat up etc.

It's the Daily Arctic these days. They do it every year but this year they're taking it to extremes.

haha. lol so that's why all the oaps keep saying its cold despite the actual temps being mild as you like for the time of year.

M&S just sent me a load of 20% off vouchers, to be used between 12th and 16th December. There are several and each may be used multiple times in store or twice online.

First time I've had such a thing from M&S.

That's not saving money, that is spending money....an 80% extra spend. ;)

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/dec/13/high-street-price-cuts-consumer-spending-falls-christmas

With consumer confidence lagging behind the cost of living, Christmas shoppers are holding out for discounts

High street sales fell unexpectedly in the first week of December as squeezed consumers put off Christmas shopping, a survey indicates. Non-food sales in stores dropped 4.1% in the week ending 8 December, led by a 5.9% fall in fashion buying, figures from the accountant BDO showed. Spending on homewares increased 4.5% and online shopping jumped by 25%.

The figures underscored evidence from individual retailers that the high street is struggling despite predictions of a bumper Christmas fuelled by signs of economic recovery. With more than a week of trading to go, H&M has launched a "winter sale" with price cuts of up to 60%.

Won't someone save Christmas!
