interestrateripoff
http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/dec/04/households-christmas-spending-slump-uk Christmas may be the season for a festive spending spree, but Britain's cash-conscious households have restrained their annual festive blowout in the face of recession and austerity, according to a new analysis by the Office for National Statistics. As retailers pin their hopes on a last-minute surge in spending over the next couple of weeks, the ONS revealed that in real terms, Christmas spending in the average household was no higher last year than in 2006. "Household expenditure in volume terms during Q4 2012 was at broadly the same level as in Q4 2006, reflecting changing household circumstances, including the relatively weak growth of real households' disposable income over this period," the ONS said in its latest economic review. Wages have consistently grown more slowly than prices over recent years, and resorting to a more frugal Christmas is one way households have managed to make ends meet. Ash4781
Oh it's an ONS analysis. "There has also been a sharp rise in spending on "photographic and optical equipment", which shows an average real-terms increase of almost 19%"

Barclaycard, which processes almost half of all UK credit and debit business, reported a 3pc rise in consumer spending in November, the best of the year. But it said that shoppers were being “savvy”: the number of transactions rose 6.5pc last month, yet the average amount for each transaction was down 3.3pc. Online spending accounted for 21pc of sales, up 1pc on a year ago. Traders getting nervous...

Mrs Bear
M&S just sent me a load of 20% off vouchers, to be used between 12th and 16th December. interestrateripoff
http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/dec/13/high-street-price-cuts-consumer-spending-falls-christmas With consumer confidence lagging behind the cost of living, Christmas shoppers are holding out for discountsHigh street sales fell unexpectedly in the first week of December as squeezed consumers put off Christmas shopping, a survey indicates. Non-food sales in stores dropped 4.1% in the week ending 8 December, led by a 5.9% fall in fashion buying, figures from the accountant BDO showed. Spending on homewares increased 4.5% and online shopping jumped by 25%. The figures underscored evidence from individual retailers that the high street is struggling despite predictions of a bumper Christmas fuelled by signs of economic recovery. With more than a week of trading to go, H&M has launched a "winter sale" with price cuts of up to 60%. Won't someone save Christmas!
