Europe's Peak Youth Unemployment Gets Peak-Er

Despite a ratings 'upgrade' Spain's youth unemployment rate has re-surged to a record 57.4% (just below that of Greece which still tops the scary chart list at 58%). Italy and Portugal also saw notable rises (despite the former's record low short-dated bond yields) at 41.2% and 36.5% respectively. Ireland and France saw modest improvements but overall the Euro-zone's youth unemployment just keeps rising. In spite of all the rhetoric from Merkel, Van Rompuy, and Barroso, 24.4% of Europe's under-25 population is unemployed...

Incredible that youths in Spain / Greece aren't rioting at these levels, near 60% youth unemployment. I wonder how many vote?

Indeed.

A friend has a police office relative, he says hot weather greatly increases the chance of riots in the Uk.

Perhaps they are used to it. Wait until cash for Aircon runs out

What's the theory then ?

Youth unemployment isn't anywhere near 60%. Youth unemployment rate is calculated as a proportion of young people unemployed to the young people economically active - which only makes up 43% on average of the 15-24 population.

Youth unemployment ratio is the figure you want, which measures proportion of young people unemployed to total young people. As of end 2012, that was 20% in Spain and 16% in Greece. Not good, but nowhere near as bad as the misused numbers the media love.

The UK youth unemployment ratio wasn't much below Greece, we had 12% (unemployment rate 21%), and the EU average was 9.7%. Romania, incidentally, had 7% and Bulgaria 8.5%.

Don't worry, all these young people are being held in reserve..... Until the boomers are too old to wipe their own backsides. There will be plenty of jobs in about 10 years.

What a life! :(
