Tory Councillor On Trial Over Alleged £154,000 Theft

Recommended Posts

A CONSERVATIVE councillor is due to go on trial today charged with stealing £154,000 from a 91-year-old woman.

John Morgan, 74, denies the theft from Beryl Gittens, of Newbury, between March 2005 and January 2012.

The Vale of White Horse district councillor has stepped down as vice-chairman of the council’s planning committee.

He is on bail and the trial is due to last three to four days.

Morgan’s defence against a charge of theft — that the Alzheimer’s sufferer had asked him to gamble away her money — prosecutors told Oxford Crown Court:

“[The defence will claim that ] there was a conversation between just the two of them, not overheard by any other person.

“Morgan alleges she said ‘I want you to promise when I go there isn’t a penny for those b****** to squabble over’.”

“He would say that Beryl loved to gamble. He was the only person who knew that about her.”

Mrs Gittens had her care taken over by her local authority after her funds fell low. Meanwhile Morgan was receiving £7,257 per year in his role as vice chair of planning at Vale of White Horse District Council.

A verdict is expected on Wednesday or Thursday.

Anyone with Alzheimer's is such easy prey for con artists. And even if family suspect, if they don't have power of attorney there's sod all they can do. I have heard more than once of relatives having to stand by helplessly as a parent gives many thousands to some new 'best friend', who as often as not has been turning them against their own family. God knows dementia is hard enough to deal with, without people like this sticking their thieving oars in.

Nice to know that such an honourable person would be setting the planning policies where I live.
