War In The Pacific?

A couple of worrying blogs from the Telegraph.

China-Japan rearmament is Keynesian stimulus, if it doesn't go horribly wrong

Asia is on the cusp of a full-blown arms race. The escalating clash between China and almost all its neighbours in the Pacific has reached a threshold. All other economic issues at this point are becoming secondary.

Beijing's implicit threat to shoot down any aircraft that fails to adhere to its new air control zone in the East China Sea is a watershed moment for the world. The issue cannot easily be finessed. Other countries either comply, or they don't comply. Somebody has to back down...

...The gravity of the latest dispute should by now be obvious even to those who don't pay attention the Pacific Rim, the most dangerous geostrategic fault line in the world. The Asian arms race is young, but clearly under way already. China has launched its first stealth drone, known as Sharp Sword. It developing indigenous aircraft carriers. Its “Two-Ocean-Strategy” implies a fleet of five or six carrier battle groups.

Japan is already rearming. It is building a de facto marine force. It has launched its largest warship since WW2, an 800-foot long DDH-class helicopter carrier, an aircraft carrier in all but name...

...One misjudgement by either side in the East China Sea could change our world entirely. If you are not concerned, perhaps you should be.

Is China about to tell the West: 'Game Over'

With its fuel needs accounted for, China’s next decision is whether or not to pre-emptively attack US bases in the Western Pacific as part of its attack on Japan and the Philippines. It is almost certain to, for the same reason that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor...

...This dread moment may be closer than we think:

A further indication of Chinese timing is the tone of rhetoric being used by China in describing what it will do. For example, Reuters reported on June 28 that “China’s state media warned on Saturday that a ‘counterstrike’ against the Philippines was inevitable if it continues to provoke Beijing in the South China Sea”. A dispassionate observer would consider the notion that the Philippines is provoking China to be delusional. The statement in the state media would have been for domestic consumption — preparing the Chinese public for war by invoking Filipino provocation as the casus belli. The nature of the language suggests China is in the late stages of preparing for the coming conflict.

Or, if a military conflagration strikes you as too implausible, how about an economic one?...

...The world is changing, and most Americans have absolutely no idea what this is going to mean for them. As demand for the U.S. dollar and U.S. debt goes down, the things that we buy at the store will cost a lot more, our standard of living will go down and it will become a lot more expensive for everyone (including the U.S. government) to borrow money.

Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done about any of this at this point. When it comes to economics, China has been playing chess while the United States has been playing checkers. And now decades of very, very foolish decisions are starting to catch up with us.

Scary stuff.

A Chinese nuclear sub surfaced off the coast of California a month ago and conducted missile firing trials - it wasn't reported in any US media and none in the UK that I am aware of.

Two weeks ago several Chinese TV programmes did programmes about Chinesenuclear attacks on the US, which cities to target and showing radiation fall-out, millions of dead, etc, etc. Again, not reported in the US media.

Linky? I can't find anything with a quick Google search... Rumours like this are quite common every few years, not that I don't find it believable!

I served in the Canadian Navy a while back.

Our trigger for Chinese intervention was and still remains the one thing they really want; Taiwan.

If boots go on the ground there, then the Pacific will see war.

Anything else is just posturing, although they really do hate the Japanese.

EDIT: I should add that China is receiving threats because of its energy, military, and economic policies... link, link, link, link. Plus more if you are bothered to google things for yourself.

What happened to the 'War with Iran' that the right-wing nutjobs have spent years salivating over?

The right wing always was seeing China as the next evil empire but 911 and Iraq got them side tracked. The first year of Bubba's Presidency saw rising tension with China. Then 911 happened.

Arguably, without 911 therr would have been no massive iphone profits for Apple by making things cheap in China.

They did it again.

Are you sure you are not confusing the missile with China's unveiling of its plans to nuke America if necessary?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hy%C5%ABga-class_helicopter_destroyer

Length: 197 m (646 ft)

Wiki has it shorter.

Invincible was longer 689 ft (210 m)

No Ski Ramp, I would hardly say it's anything other than a helicopter carrier.
