I've been lead to believe that the Express used to be some sort of (semi) serious paper about 40 years ago, so maybe the degradation hasn't been noticed by regular subscribers.

Sort of like the transition the Telegraph has undergone in the last few years.

That's a good question, you certainly don't see it being read much on public transport in London. Presumably people are buying it secretly, hiding it inside their porn mags, and reading it in the privacy of their own homes.

Should take this further, who would read it for free if left on the empty seat next to you on an underground train at the far end of a line with nothing else to do for 30 minutes?....the proof of the pudding is actually picking up and reading.

I've been going in the same barbers for several years, and they always have two of the days papers on the table for customers to read while waiting. It's one copy of the Sun and one copy of the Express.

It's made an interesting experiment over the years to see which paper customers go for first. The Sun wins hands down. It's nearly always the first paper to be picked up, whereas the Express just sits there until someone gets so mind numbingly bored of waiting for their haircut, or for the copy of the Sun to be free, that they have a cursory glance at the Express in the meantime.

Recently I overheard the owner of the shop say to someone "There's never much in that is there? I don't know why I bother buying it." after a customer flung the Express down in disgust.

The problem is I think that while the Sun has a massive pair of t*** on page 3, the Express has a massive pair of t*** as the proprietor and editor.....

Good info. Most print papers are on for a crunch before too long, losing 5%+ per annum from levels already half what they were a decade ago has to hurt. No wonder they are full of press releases and half-baked advertorials.

I don't think that I have ever known anyone buy it, or actually seen a paper copy of it anywhere. So I can shed no light on this question at all.

It's just one of the many things in that list of "Who buys these?" - Muller Rice is another. I mean, FFS, desert rice is fairly horrid at the best of times anyway. There are always tons of adverts for that. It's almost as if people have to be indoctrinated into buying it since nobody would select it using preference and logic alone.
