The Knimbies who say No
People's grandparents. I've been lead to believe that the Express used to be some sort of (semi) serious paper about 40 years ago, so maybe the degradation hasn't been noticed by regular subscribers. Sort of like the transition the Telegraph has undergone in the last few years.

Neil D Possitt
My gran did. My gran did too, for many, many years. Then suddenly decided circa 1990 that it was trash and started buying 'Today' instead Thing is I don't remember the Daily Express of 25+ years ago as being all that bad. I can only imagine how scathing my gran would be of the Maddie-obsessed, property ramping pamphlet that it is nowadays.
okaycuckoo
Surely the front page headline is an outright advertisement, bought and paid for. So it doesn't matter how many copies they sell. The buyers of whatever copies they do sell - mystery to me.

Steppenpig
That's a good question, you certainly don't see it being read much on public transport in London. Presumably people are buying it secretly, hiding it inside their porn mags, and reading it in the privacy of their own homes.

Who buys it? Lower middle class boomers after a gossip mag masquarading as a newspaper.

Should take this further, who would read it for free if left on the empty seat next to you on an underground train at the far end of a line with nothing else to do for 30 minutes?....the proof of the pudding is actually picking up and reading. Neil D Possitt
I've been going in the same barbers for several years, and they always have two of the days papers on the table for customers to read while waiting. It's one copy of the Sun and one copy of the Express. It's made an interesting experiment over the years to see which paper customers go for first. The Sun wins hands down. It's nearly always the first paper to be picked up, whereas the Express just sits there until someone gets so mind numbingly bored of waiting for their haircut, or for the copy of the Sun to be free, that they have a cursory glance at the Express in the meantime. Recently I overheard the owner of the shop say to someone "There's never much in that is there? I don't know why I bother buying it." after a customer flung the Express down in disgust. The problem is I think that while the Sun has a massive pair of t*** on page 3, the Express has a massive pair of t*** as the proprietor and editor..... Frank Hovis
Well the real answer is: nobody. It was older people who kept buying it out of habit because they used to buy it when it was a proper newspaper. And older people will in time cease to buy it, as will we all, and nobody new is coming along. Circulation figures are: 1956 4,042,334 (second most popular paper) 1976 2,594,000 1997 1,241,336 2003 983,391 2008 752,699 2013 529,648 (seventh most popular paper) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_newspapers_in_the_United_Kingdom_by_circulation As to the Express itself, well we will ask an older person to speak candidly:

Good info. Most print papers are on for a crunch before too long, losing 5%+ per annum from levels already half what they were a decade ago has to hurt. No wonder they are full of press releases and half-baked advertorials.
DTMark
I don't think that I have ever known anyone buy it, or actually seen a paper copy of it anywhere. So I can shed no light on this question at all. It's just one of the many things in that list of "Who buys these?" - Muller Rice is another. I mean, FFS, desert rice is fairly horrid at the best of times anyway. There are always tons of adverts for that. It's almost as if people have to be indoctrinated into buying it since nobody would select it using preference and logic alone.
Starla
I know someone who reads The Express. I didn't know this before I became friends with them, so I can hardly un-friend them on this news. Personality profile is exactly as you'd expect. She is the wife of a guy at work, he earns around 30k a month, she hasn't worked for the last 25 years and spends most of her free time spending his money. She's early 60's, they own several properties, and are currently renting a place in Richmond for circa £8,000pm (because the shops are nice round there). Completely detached from reality, no idea about the real world whatsoever. That's one person that reads The Express.
