Vatican Suspends 'bishop Of Bling' Who Spent €31M Renovating A Property

Recommended Posts

Germany’s “Bling Bishop”, who sparked outrage after spending €15,000 of diocese money on a bathtub and €350,000 on walk-in wardrobes, has been suspended after falling foul of the famously frugal Francis I.

In a last minute nod to cost-cutting the Bishop of Limburg, Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, flew into Rome at the weekend on Ryanair after been summoned to explain his lavish spending, following protests from local church-goers.

But it appears Francis I, who models himself on the ascetic Saint from Assisi, was not impressed after hearing Tebartz-van Elst’s attempts to justify home improvements and renovations totalling €31m – more than double the original €13.5m estimate presented to the diocese.

Clearly he needs his own TV show on UK TV.

I don't see a problem. He doesn't own the property so can't leave it in his will to pass on to his kids. Even if he had any, which for a catholic bishop isn't likely. In the long term the Vatican would have stood a chance to make money on it, first as a tourist venue and eventually by selling to an oligarch.

It's just like the royal palaces, of which you and me are paying for upkeep and renovation. They belong to the nation. The fact we can't go to any of them or use the facilities is irrelevant. How gauling must it be for Liz and her brood to be sitting in a gaff that I own and that she couldn't dump at a profit for a glitzy place in warmer climes.

p.s. Glitzy wasn't my first choice of adjective, but for some reason the forum reads sw@nnky as a swear word.

I must admit, and I never thought I'd say this, but I rather like the new pope. Telling everyone to stop fixating on sex, trying to model the church on something that nice Jewish boy might actually recognise - has this man no sense of tradition?

Still, my general reservations remain in place...
