Outrage on Twitter.The UK generosity of allowing EU migrants access to health care child benefit & unemployment benefit. No mention that the UK is in the minority when it comes to housing benefit landlord benefit.

Why would benefit tourists come to the UK when benefits are so much more generous in places like Germany (and better quality of life too)?

Same reason they want to study here, the can speak the language they learnt at school. Wonder what the stats for Ireland are?

I read that Germany have 10,000 unemployed UK citizens (?)

Was it guitarman (?) who had an engineering background planning on a move to Germany.

I haven't seen his posts for a while so hopefully it all went well.

Are they? You don't get automatic health cover and an unemployed German I met last week told me even getting the equivalent of Job Seekers Allowance is a pain as they can ask you to do any job they have available. She's moved from Germany for that reason and is, in effect, a benefit tourist.

I have zero sympathy for the British viewpoint, a non contributory benefit system is unsustainable with open borders.

As far as I know no-one in government is even talking about making the system contributory either.

Thus the path is being opened for the collection of idiots at UKIP.

I bet they don't have a huge list of jobs that people are allowed to enter the country for like we do here.

Plenty of 'hard working' Polish here, but not many from elsewhere.

For them the problem with Ireland it is not a direct transit link back to Slovak/China/Malaysia/India etc. you have to go via the UK. this is a massive put off for them.

Another major issue for them is there is not a large established community of Slovak/China/Malaysia/India etc. so they feel isolated.

And basically the Irish are more racist than the British.

Germany has a huge amount of British passport holders who don't speak English and have never been here, usually through an ex services father. The main reason for the passport was to avoid mandatory military service. So I wonder how many of those are really UK citizens?

Any UK born individual will easily have that from their childhood. Everyone else won't.

The truth that is never addressed.

They have themselves in a bind. They block attempts to harmonise taxes and social policies and rail against any steps that would limit free trade/ free movement of peoples etc. all the while putting out stories about 'scroungers' in an attempt to garner favour to cut benefits even further.

Can't do that while in the EU, EU citizens must have the same rights as UK citizens regarding access to benefits, this would be clearly making a distinction.

Contributions-based is the only way without leaving the EU.

these benefits are not even close to being accurate. I see a few that are incorrect, but one I can prove and which im 100% sure of, is that I live in Latvia, I am a UK male, aged 33 I pay UK national insurance and always have done, but I receive from Latvia, every month for my son Lats 100 (GBP approx. 120) all healthcare is free, all schooling is free, and just for the birth of my son we receive 600GBP,

I know the generous child benefits here are because the Latvian government is worried about the decreasing population; but I wanted to post to demonstrate how dishonest this news article is; If I can state for a fact one part is completely incorrect how many other parts are also disingenuous

And so contribution based for UK born and bred as well. There are IIRC 1,000,000 16 to 24 year olds who are unemployed and I guess many of these have never worked or contributed. If they are receiving benefits now then their benefits would be taken away which may cause the odd riot unless it was phased in in some way.
