RiP Tom

RIP. Maybe it's time for another re-read of Red Storm Rising, which IMO is easily his best book.

Didn't he turn the whole thing into a franchise with ghost writers?

The Op-Centre books were written with another writer who one assumes did most of the work. I read the first couple and really enjoyed them either way.

Some of his mid-period books didn't exactly chime with my burgeoning late-teenage liberalism- Executive Orders and that one where Mr Clarke slaughters a bunch of drug dealers for example (though the latter was still jolly exciting). But after a decade's break I found Rainbow Six in a holiday home we were staying in and really enjoyed it- can't really argue with graphicaly slaughtering a load of extra-Malthusian eco-miserablists!

I first read it aged 13 and I must admit that I pretty much skimmed the buildup to why the war happenned. But from that point onwards it's one gripping engagement after the other- the atlantic convoy defense and submarine bits being the highlight for me- and the attack on the Nimitz. TBH I'd put it in my top 5 books of all time; I'm not exactly the most well read geezer but I've done a few Booker and Pulitzer winners!
