George Osborne says that welfare claimants will have to work for their dole money

Welfare claimants will have to “work for the dole” by cooking meals for the elderly, picking up litter and cleaning up graffiti, George Osborne will announce.

Tens of thousands of long-term jobless welfare claimants will have to work for 30 hours a week doing community service or lose their unemployment benefits, the Chancellor will say.

"For the first time, all long-term unemployed people who are capable of work will be

required to do something in return for their benefits to help them find work," Osborne

will say, adding: "But no one will get something for nothing. Help to work – and in

return work for the dole."

I'm looking forward to seeing all these unemployed people turning up at jobcentres daily, its going to be utter chaos.

Seriously shows hows out of touch and inept the Government are. The previous Labour government tried New Deal which was a farce, the Tories are onto a loser and totally out of touch!

Ah yes.Just like Labour before them the Tories show how they dont understand what drives welfare.

Someone who worked for 30 years and is made redundant at 55 who gets £3600 a year will be forced onto this for 30 hours a week.

Someone on tax credits on £25k a year in benefits can carry on working 16 hours part time.

The loud claps from the very people and political class that cheered when our industry moved offshore,,who signed treaty after treaty that made sure our workers were undercut at every level and the government that wants even today to inflate even more house prices so workers need even more debt just for a roof.

Instead of this shouldn't they be standing up and telling us when Universal Credit will be taking on all the tax credit claims,?.200k a month should be moving over from next month.Iv heard the actual number next month is expected to be 38.

I thought the last Labour government was the worst this country had ever seen,,and it was,,this one however seems to be matching it for stupidity.

Only if jobless have three years on the dole and have refused work, apparently.

The Indy outlines the Help To Work regime much as the Telegraph:

...200,000 people a year who have claimed jobseeker’s allowance for three years will lose benefits unless they take up one of three options after two years on the Work Programme:

  • Thirty hours a week for six months of community work such as making meals for the elderly, cleaning up litter and graffiti or charity work, plus 10 hours of “job search activity”.

  • Daily attendance at a jobcentre to search for work instead of a brief interview once a fortnight.

  • A mandatory intensive regime for claimants with underlying problems such as mental health, drug addiction or illiteracy.

People who refuse to take part will lose four weeks’ worth of benefit for their first breach of the rules and three months’ worth for a second offence.

.

How are people going to get to the Job Centres every day? JSA is such a tiny amount of money to live on that the government will have to allow travel expenses for this, they will have to provide child care for unemployed parents to attend either unpaid work or signing on,on a daily basis. Cameron really hasn't thought this through at all. The workfare scheme in some US states was run like this and had to be scrapped because it was a bureaucratic nightmare.

People need jobs, for financial security and for self esteem. People will work, if there are jobs. That is what Cameron should be concentrating on.

As for the mandatory intensive regime for claimants with underlying problems such as mental health, drug addiction or illiteracy, surely if you are ill, treatment should be available regardless? You shouldn't have to be unemployed for 3 years before receiving help. It sounds like Cameron sees mental health treatment and drug rehab as a punishment rather than a necessary service.

Watched him pretend to wipe away a tear at the conference tribute to Maggie :(. He is dangerously dim.

Welfare claimants will have to “work for the dole” by cooking meals for the elderly, picking up litter and cleaning up graffiti, George Osborne will announce.

The new Help to Work scheme will be put in place next year and could see as many as 60,000 long-term unemployed people doing Community Work Placements.

do not blame Tories for the tax credits. Labour created them on purpose to make 2/3 of the working population dependant on the state (meaning Labour). If Tories would cancel tax credits (what they should) they would loose elections for next 50 years

tax credits do not have a political solution. it is like taking a drug from the junkie

but forcing unemployed doing social work is a good idea; thay are paid for already, but do nothing productive

No.

Never being the best candidate who applied due to age, gender, physical appearance, accent, health, commitments to caring for young or old relatives, educational qualifications, work history, and a generally high number of applicants per position?

Also living in a country with a high cost of living thanks to unavoidable taxes and rents meaning that potential employers or customers would need to part with £x per hour to keep you in work, but the intrinsic value of your labour is only worth £y (x>y).

It's easy for those who have what the job market demands to sit and sneer at those who don't. There but for the grace of God etc

They acquiesce, that's ultimately why governments pay benefits.

Neither Labour nor Tory understand this, but they'd find out pretty quickly.

On the other hand, forcing people to work is difficult and expensive, you need overseers and enforcers.

If the work done is less valuable than the cost of doing it then it is, by definition, unproductive.

Osbrown has found a way of making unemployed people less productive.

Not to mention that, if you're English, you've got to overcome years of racist propaganda that your work ethic is somehow inferior to that of an Eastern European.

30 hours 'working' and 10 hours job hunting? 10 hours isn't enough except where there are no jobs.

Attending job centre daily to look for work? Unworkable.

Community service? They should be upfront and call it a punishment or pay nmw.

The JC attempt to put you on the work programme in your first month of unemployment, so watch out!

What is needed is 6 months jsa paid at a decent rate, support for the first month in work as a loan, after 6 months real training in trades. Train them to steam clean graffiti an pay them etc
