Stupid People Who Don't Listen

Recommended Posts

A relative of mine, works in Manchester, into btl as the only way to invest (not invested yet as young but got big plans as property only goes up)

Came to visit last month, I said best way was get local train from Manchester Victoria station straight to my local station on the Western side of Leeds, less than an hour

Ignores my advice and goes from Piccadilly entailing going into and out of Leeds, taking 2 hours and costing nearly twice as much

She has done this twice now despite my repeated advice

And then recently got stuck in Paris airport for 14 hours due to cancelled connection back to Manchester. Moaned on Facebook, so I said on Facebook just pop into Paris for lunch and get back in plenty of time. But oh no she didn't fancy checking her baggage out (!) And didn't really believe it was generally possible. So proceeded to moan about being trapped in the airport when she wasn't

Am I and my opinions, including property yields as a measure of value (again goes unacknowledged), invisible?

I expect she is a bit shy and retiring...probably doesnt like to make a scene...hence, she's done it once, is confident with that method, trying something new terrifies her.

I expect also she is the type that says no immediately...best way to get your way with these is to accept the no, but "plant a seed"...tend it and she will probably "discover" the new method you suggested herself some time later.

Spot on.

Many, many people have an inbuilt resistance to what they see as being told what to do, the effect of this is to render them unable to distinguish between good advice they should follow and anything else. Pity her, with this handicap unless she has very high intelligence of her own she will not go far.

But, she's been told that property is unconditionally a great investment and swallowed that completely

This is why people hire consultants at companies. As the company specialist in an area, the chances are you'll hit a brick wall at some point, or often have your specialist advice completely disregarded. Get a consultant to say the same thing, and the blockage often disappears.

Families are the same. So you either plant a seed and wait a year or two for them to come up with idea independently, or get a friend of theirs to suggest it. Never be tempted to take credit - they'll never believe you (and you now occupy the stealer of ideas as well as deluded fool box). Instead, give them credit for coming up a wonderful idea (and for maximum effectiveness - say this to a third party as it will get back to them). They may then more open to your suggestions in the future - but if not go back to planting seeds/working via a friend.

In an ideal world, you wouldn't have to jump through these hoops to get people do the sane rational thing - but unfortunately, humans are often neither sane or rational.
