Retail sales rose at their fastest annual rate in over two years in July as a heat wave boosted sales of barbecue food and outdoor items, adding to signs that third-quarter growth has got off to a strong start.

Retail sales volumes jumped 1.1 percent on the month - almost twice as fast as expected - to give an annual rise of 3.0 percent, the highest since January 2011, official data showed on Thursday.

Ten-year gilt yields briefly returned to a near two-year high after the data, as traders speculated the economy might recover faster than the Bank of England expects, triggering an earlier-than-planned interest rate rise.

"Wow again. It's hard to remember the last time a UK data release wasn't stunningly positive," said Rob Wood, UK economist at Berenberg Bank. "Low interest rates, a sunnier outlook and rising house prices are getting consumers out consuming."

Sales don't matter it's unemployment isn't it now for interest rates?

Stunningly positive they should get him quoting on property.

Actually if sales were up by 1%, isn't that less than inflation, so people are buying less, or did I miss something?

No I did miss something, it was 3% on the year, so bugger all growth then! :o

High street sales flattened in July as consumers put their feet up in the heatwave rather than going shopping, figures show.

Retailers also appeared to lose out as a result of sporting triumphs for tennis player Andy Murray and England's cricketers that kept many viewers glued to their screens rather than out spending.

Sales were negative compared with last year for two weeks of the month but surged in the final week after the main sporting fixtures finished, according to the BDO high street sales tracker on Monday.

Just goes to show.
