Further, a particular subset of young women are about the worst drivers I encounter on the roads. Aggressive, inattentive, extremely poor skills which results in extreme risks being taken e.g. vastly inappropriate speeds in congested areas. This particular girl is particularly aggressive and twittered she deliberately abused the cyclist before deliberately running him over, while boasting of still being drunk from the night before. Not sure I can say much about makes/models but usually something snazzy and small, I guess insurance costs are something even they cannot ignore. Looking at how some of them drive I'm amazed more people do not die. I wonder if it's partly the fallout of having to compete in a job market dominated by men. The only place cycling, and not owning a car, is a feasible transport option is London and Twitter is a communication system uniquely designed for London-based meeja tossers so it doesn't really represent a broad cross-section of opinion. Most hobby cyclists like those you see riding in packs at the weekend will be young adults - middle aged adults and will be paying road tax etc. on a car as well as a mountain of other taxes, is it really worth the admin of trying to tax cyclists? Road tax banded on Co2 emissions, so even if bikes had to have a tax disc, it would be £0 just like a 900cc 107 etc and making cyclists have £0 road tax discs would add huge work load to the DVLA for no gain what so ever. 2. Any half keen cyclist riding around a £500+ bike will specifically have cover provided by the house insurance policy (over and above the standard bike insurance that comes with vanilla policies). Even specialist bike policies are minimal cost, guess why? VERY LOW RISK. 3. Riding in packs when there are more than 5 cyclists is the safest way for all concerned, if you ride in a string of 5 riders you will have cars trying to squeeze past 2-3 at a time and causing havoc. Not that amazing, a sufficient number of cyclists are extremely annoying. Walking to and from work I have seen this play out countless times: bus stopped at lights indicating to turn left, cyclist rides right up the left hand side and stops an inch away from the side, right in the drivers blind spot. Lights turn green, bus goes left, cyclist gets knocked onto the pavement. Cyclist gets up and chases after the bus screaming blue murder. I just cannot work out what they thought was going to happen. I just find it odd that for many people the reflex response to a car driver intentionally driving into somebody riding a bicycle is to start listing bad things other people riding bicycles have done. Even you did it just now. If you heard that a motorist had intentionally run over a pedestrian, would you start listing bad things you've seen pedestrians do when out and about? I find the UK's mob hate against people who ride bicycles really weird. It's fair to be annoyed/angry with people who ride bicycles (or any other vehicle) dangerously, but the mob is clearly determined to lump together all people who ride bicycles into one group that deserves to be hated (and run over?) Probably. I like to think I'm an equal opportunities misanthrope. In fact I very nearly threw in a bit about cars swerving off motorways over the chevrons despite miles of signs in the last post. Come to Germany, and enjoy the experience of having motorists giving way to you (even waiting at turnings 50 yards ahead until you pass). It's wonderful. (Bad things do sometimes happen here too, of course) The problem in the UK is that motorist basically don't accept cyclists as a legitimate part of the traffic, so their mere presence is a cause for irritation. Not just cyclists of course. Many moons ago I saw a car flattened by a truck turning left from Shepherds Bush Road onto Goldhawk road. Someone will say that you can't turn left there but forty years ago you could. It brought home to me the fact that if you cannot see the drivers head he cannot possibly see you. I don't live anywhere near London; in fact I'm rural - fields at every side of us - yet I managed for years without the hassle and costs of a car. When the kids were too small for their own bikes we had a trailer. All we did was to choose somewhere to live that was within a short distance of big employment centres; within walking/cycling distance of schools, shops, rail station etc; and had a goodish bus service. Also worth noting that someone, regardless of their means of transport remains liable for damage whether they have insurance or not. I have cycle insurance - but have only ever used it to pursue drivers for damages. Which, given the disparity in potential harm is always going to be the predominant use for cycle-insurance.
