richc
The BBC really, really needs to be defunded. There is no excuse for using one of the most regressive taxes in the UK to fund garbage like this, churned out by airhead minor aristocrats. 2buyornot2buy
Anyone who buys a flat in Belfast needs their head looked at. Anyone that pays 250k for one, needs to be put down.
Dorkins
iPlayer link The Belfast story is incredible. At the age of 24 she paid £245k of which £50k was her deposit. She thought it would be worth £200k. The valuer put it at £120k-£130k.
OnionTerror
...just shows hows many people (esp young people) are completely financially illiterate...you could of course have "financial planning" lessons at school (something which I am an advocate of), however, i'd imagine a lot of people on this show would have gone "yeah, whatever", or "boring", if they were offered them whilst they were at school... The higher echelons are hoping that people on this type of programme, stay ignorant, buy into the system, and thus being able to keep the bubble inflated for longer... Dorkins
Also the couple getting screwed by the council freeholder on maintenance charges after buying an ex-LA flat with problem neighbours. They looked totally miserable. Strip away the kids TV-style presentation and underneath this programme holds some harsh lessons.

Yeah but last 6 months was excellent time to buy. I don't get why HPCers in NI didn't. Edited July 3, 2013 by Killer Bunny
2buyornot2buy
Yeah but last 6 months was excellent time to buy. I don't get why HPCers in NI didn't. And that's based on figures from which property index? You realise they are all still negative.

Doesn't sound like it. I think they're trying to make it 'balanced'. Except the case studies, if you'll forgive me abusing the term, are all renting is dead money, rah-rah idiots. One of the 3 has already been binned on the basis they couldn't conform to Francescan monk style personal austerity. Another had a £40k inheritance as a deposit and a BoMaD loan of £80k to buy mortgage free and the third seemed to consist of a young lady in a mixture of PT employment and a roofer who spent most of the winter without work. Renting was shown in a positive light if you we're prepared to a) share with your mates, live like a monk as a property guardian or c) live with someone old enough to be your great grand mother and act as domestic staff - rent was £25 pw + 10 hours work. And for the ex-LA horror story couple there was another young lady who enjoyed the sun rise from her east facing high rise flat.

goldbug9999
Hmm, sounds like virgins done up the wrong un by monster c.ck. Was this meant to be a pro-property programme? Doesn't sound like it. It was very pro - insidious and hateful propaganda about with a strong subtext of make every possible sacrifice you can to "get on the ladder". The small number of token horror stories only served to give this underlying message even more credibility.
