New series started last night on BBC2.

I say series, probably three shows and an expensive "special" going across a desert in some reasonably priced bangers.

But has Top Gear turned into "Last Of The Summer Wine?" They will all be going down hill in a bath before too long.

May in a boat was a hoot though.

Its only the challenges that keep my interest, but they have run out of idea's with things to do with bangers and caravans.

And great sections of the show now bore me. The reasonably priced car (just an excuse for Clarkson to do his interviewer bit) the Stig and tearing round a racetrack in a hot hatch or a Toshiba Valeron (or whatever they are called).

I've never liked this program, unbelievably staged/faked and presented as "real", smug presenters, typical massive BBC budget with everyone troughing from it.

And its not very green is it, driving a massive 4x4 to the North Pole or whatever.

Clarkson is a pathetic past it mong, May is a talentless tedious chancer and bore overdue for a good slap and the midget is wisely getting into game show commentary.

/rant off

There's something quite pitiful about blokes with beer bellies in their 50s doing power slides on a track in hot hatches.

Like Mick Jagger's performance at Glastonbury - 30 years beyond its sell-by date.

Shoot them.

Because if yoofs were doing it, people of a certain age would be asking why they were wasting money on cars when they should be devoting their lives to mortgage debt. Can't have it both ways we're told.

The Stones thing seems to be more of a certain demographic still hogging the cultural agenda.

Well it was the first time they'd done Glastonbury apparently so I think it's difficult to claim that.

However, the wall to wall BBC coverage of Glastonbury is certainly part of it, like the unsackable David Dimbleby, Clarkson et al. Clarkson's supposed to be a free market Oxfordshire Tory nutter, yet made his millions sucking on the BBC taxpayer teat, as most of them do.

Needs someone at the BBC with the balls to simply sack these people every 5 years regardless of age, popularity of anything else. 5 years max public funding then let them find their own way in the world.

Mick Jagger just looked like a sad old bloke and Keith Richards needed cover until his arthritic stumps of fingers had warmed up. I'm not even convinced his guitar was plugged in for the first 3 songs............

Top gear is one of the BBC's biggest exports. I don't know the figures but I'm pretty sure the suckling on the taxpayer teat by Clarkson et al is pretty minimal.

I reckon that anyone who can manage a power slide in a hot hatch deserves a lot of respect.:D

I've heard it claimed that it makes a profit for the BBC so hard to complain about the cost of it if that's true.

I agree that it's time to give it a rest though. A bit of over-the-top silly pratting around can be quite entertaining in a switch-off-the-brain way but it's gone on for too long now.

It certainly has very little to do with the original premise of the series, ie reviewing cars you can actually afford to buy.

I remember once when they used to, say, compare the Mini Coooper to the Fiat Cinquecento Sport in an entertaining way. 'The most fun you could have with something yellow that isn't a banana'.

Now it's like watching CCTV of some blokes engaging in banter at the golf club.

I still watch it because amongst the massive quantities of chaff, there are occasional bits of wheat in there. They ocassionally rise above their middle-aged banality and some of the filmimg is stunning from a tv point of view.

The Stones thing seems to be more of a certain demographic still hogging the cultural agenda.

The most surreal thing about that Glasto Stones concert was the teenagers in the audience lapping it up.

They were cheering some 70 year old blokes staggering around the stage, not a vintage Stones performance, or is it just about being there and taking your photo nowadays?

Happy to pay £200 to see that? I'd maybe part with a tenner to see Keef & Ronnie on one of the smaller stages.

A carefully scripted show - which is supposed to be "real". The challenges are stupid. the presenters are stupid. The cars are stupid.

The only one I like is the hippy guy, who does actually have interesting things to say - whereas the other two are just dimwits with bravado. I can see why it's appealing to some people as it's basically car porn.

I am becoming a grumpy old man already. I can sense it. It's happening.I bought shoes from M&S yesterday.

my view of yesterdays show.

The challenge...entertaining like coach trip was...you visit again places youve been before and vicariously live the ride. pretty good...course, if he really had hired that car, the broken one alone would have busted the entire BBC with its damage charges.

the rest....pathetic bit with reasonably priced car....no wonder Charles Dance fracked off early...embarrasing.

Yeah, what we need is something more modern, a bit of zing. Maybe a talent show of some kind, get the public involved.

well, it cant have been worse than what they ARE filling the holes with.

They actually bother filling them in round your way?! Lucky get.

Around here they just paint yellow circles round them, either to warn you, or give you the impression that one day they'll actually get round to doing their job and fill them in...
