Vatican Chief Accountant Arrested Over Plot To Smuggle 20 Million Euros Into Italy Aboard Government Plane

Recommended Posts

One of the Vatican’s most senior money-men has been arrested in an alleged plot to smuggle 20 million Euros into Italy from Switzerland aboard a government plane.

Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, the bishop of Salerno, and the chief accountant for the Vatican’s vast property portfolio, has been taken into custody along with an Italian secret agent Mario Zito and broker Giovanni Carenzio.

Scarano, 61, who worked at Deutsche bank before taking ecclesiastical vows, is accused of fraud, corruption, and other charges, as part of a wider investigation into the IOR Vatican Bank.

Shame he had never heard of CHAPS. Or paypal even. Perhaps the fees were a bit stiff on an amount that big.

It amazes me when people are arrested for carrying money with them.

The latest episode:-

Vatican bank arrests mark new hard line

The priest is known to his friends as "Monsignor 500" because of the number of €500 bills he carries around. In the earlier case, which is still under investigation, he is said to have withdrawn €560,000 from his IOR account to pay off a mortgage on his home in Salerno, south of Naples. The money, it is charged, consisted of donations by churchgoers who believed it was going towards building a home for the terminally ill. It is alleged the monsignor gave 56 friends €10,000 each in cash, asking them for cheques or money transfers in exchange, thus enabling him to pay the cheques into his personal Italian account. Father Scarano's lawyer has said that he declares himself "absolutely innocent". The home for the terminally ill, meanwhile, remains unbuilt.
