Eurotunnel Accused Of Overcharging Train Companies

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22979166

Passengers travelling through the Channel Tunnel are being overcharged, according to the European Commission.

The EC said both passengers and freight services are paying over the odds for using the track through the tunnel, which is operated by Eurotunnel.

Eurotunnel is a private company owned by the investors who paid for and now run the Channel Tunnel.

Eurotunnel said its charges are "transparent and not excessive."

The EC has formally called on the British and French governments to look into the pricing structure and to comply with European Union rules against excessive track access charges.

The European Commission said the high prices Eurotunnel charges the train companies get passed onto passengers.

The EC also said that freight companies are put off using the Channel Tunnel because of the "excessive" charges, preferring to send their goods by road, which causes traffic congestion and pollution.

The Commission claims 43% of the Channel Tunnel's capacity is currently unused.

Is that a made up figure of 43%? Would lowering it's charges increase freight and usage?

Nothing in the article to indicate why companies are being overcharged for using it.

We used to use Eurotunnel when visiting the UK but now prefer Brittany ferries as for twice the price you get a mini cruise and a cabin and get to poundland in a much better state to enter the fray. I did find that Eurotunnel was often half empty though when we used to use them.

I'm guessing if they don't like it they can always dig another tunnel.

German rail companies have the go ahead to use the tunnel, and they would like the charges to be lower. The charges were fine but as soon as the Germans was to have access the charges are high.

This is about 3rd party rail companies (passenger i.e. eurostar or freight) being over charged not the eurotunnel Car, Coach or Lorry services.

One of the effects may have been to encourage HGVs to use Eurotunnels service (more profitable for them) instead of the freight going all the way by train thus putting more traffic on the motorways.
