As a computer guru / web developer I can tell you it's a lot more complicated that that. Facebook sends constant requests for data for everything from updates to your feed to displaying chat messages. Paddy-Power probably has a "real-time odds update" but in reality the refresh rate will be an order of magnitude lower than something like facebook.
