House In Tinsley, Sheffield, Destroyed By 'gas Blast'

Recommended Posts

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-22701234

A house has been destroyed and two more badly damaged in a suspected gas explosion in Sheffield.

The blast was reported at the mid-terrace property at 09:05 BST in Dundas Road, Tinsley, South Yorkshire Fire Service said.

A 150m (490ft) cordon has been put in place around the property and neighbouring homes have been evacuated.

There does appear to have been quite a few stories like this lately with gas explosions demolishing houses. I can't remember there being so many in such a short space of time. Has there been an increase in these incidents or does it just appear that way?

On the speculation front are these incidents increasing because people now can't afford a qualified gas fitter? Or is there simply a glut of faulty parts that have been installed in boilers or other gas appliances?

The increase in this type of incident could be to do with the cheap snotty chinese fittings all the plumbers' merchants sell these days.

Back in the day when I was in the UK fittings were all UK manufactured and of much better quality. They certainly weighed twice as much as they do now - although the rot was starting with cheap Italian brassware even then.

It could also be due to the large number of imigrant plumbers, or just householders unable to read english instructions.

Back in the 90s I knew someone on the dole in a rented house (HB claimants) who reversed their gas meter so that it registered a negative flow of gas (the gas flowmeter went backwards!). Their house always smelled of gas. When they'd built up enough 'credit; they could heat the kitchen by switching on the gas rings. It was real 'Shameless' stuff. I believe the gas companies have changed the fittings so that they can't be so simply reversed anymore, and presumably the flowmeters can't go backwards on newer meters.

However, I bet there's a thriving underground industry among the dodgier benefits claimants and householders in kits that can bypass a meter, or bodge it in some way.

No. The Pakistani landlord doesn't have to bother with things like health & safety, they don't apply to them, just everyone else.
