Eu To Dial Back Measures Against Global Warming

The European Union, which has spearheaded efforts to curb global warming, is set to adopt a change of focus in response to concerns over costs and the impact on companies in economically depressed Europe.

Under the change, the European Union will prioritize the supply of energy at affordable prices over cutting greenhouse gas emissions which impose burdens on industries, in a turnaround of the region's energy policy, an EU official said Saturday.

EU leaders will decide on the shift in energy policy at a meeting Wednesday. The change reflects requests from businesses in the 27-member zone amid the prolonged economic slump triggered by the eurozone sovereign debt crisis, the official said.

A draft conclusion of the EU leaders' meeting obtained by Kyodo News said, "Against the backdrop of high pressure on Europe's competitiveness and increasing energy demand from major economies, the EU's energy policy must ensure the uninterrupted supply of households and companies at affordable and competitive prices."

The draft said investments in new and intelligent energy infrastructure are "vital for jobs and growth and will help enhance competitiveness." The regional body calls for "a predictable climate and energy framework post-2020," according to the paper.

The European Union remains committed to emissions reduction targets under the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, under which it pledged to trim its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020.

"The European Commission is already in 'do nothing' mode on climate change, and it will obviously put off a decision on ambitious targets," the official said on the European Union's post-2020 goals.

The change in policy comes as some European companies are moving to shift operations out of the region to avoid increasing costs to meet the emissions-cut goals, and amid a decline in emission trading launched in the region in 2005.

Discussions on countermeasures against global warming have also lost momentum as the European Union focuses on steps to boost the economy ahead of the European Parliament election scheduled for May next year.

Hardly a surprise. Enterprise and reality before chicken little.

Scientists say the recent downturn in the rate of global warming will lead to lower temperature rises in the short-term.

Since 1998, there has been an unexplained "standstill" in the heating of the Earth's atmosphere.

Writing in Nature Geoscience, the researchers say this will reduce predicted warming in the coming decades.

But long-term, the expected temperature rises will not alter significantly.

...

"The most extreme projections are looking less likely than before." <-- umm, ok...

In other words, nobody knows what is going on, and all the 'science' has only increased the colour temperature of panic amongst western hippies and google/wiki search climate experts.

So we won't all moving to Antarctica, right Professor Sir David King?

Perhaps hockey sticks are best left on the ice, in some outdoor rink in near Montreal, or Stockholm, right Mr Mann?

At least Al Gore is a solid billionaire by peddling his brand of panic in a shiny DVD box...after all, he invented the internet and is full of integrity! (supposedly)

Yes, climate change is real. It happens every second of every day, but the policy of ramming rather fanciful and doom laden pseudo prophecies down your throats in order to get your hard earned money is failing.

"The temperature is not increasing now but yeah it's...it's in the seas you see!"

Al Gore - used to feel sorry for the guy for not winning the presidency.

You AGW deniers must be getting desperate if you have to resort to vague newspaper-fillers like this to support your anti-science half-wittery. Not to mention the tired Al Gore ad homs and hockey stick "humour". We've heard it all before.

Which part do you want to discuss without ad-hominem? The absence of measured temperature rise over the last 17 years or so, or the failure of the models to predict the trajectory?

You should stick to subjects you know about, like olive oil.

You're pissing in the wind snowflux. Your view just doesn't matter. Even if you're right it's just too long term for anyone to care. A bit like the houseprice crash. Might happen, might not, might take much longer than anyone can be arsed waiting. In the meantime the rest of the world will just plough on regardless, not caring. Because we really, really don't care and neither do you most likely.

You and I might be relatively sheltered from 'climate change' in the short term, but poikilothermic creatures dominate the Earth, and there are good examples of their populations and communities changing rapidly as their environment alters - especially in the sea - and we often forget that we rely upon the 'ecosystem services' they provide.
