Apple Won't Fix Your Computer If You Smoke Near It

Consumerist's Laura Northrup rounds up several years' worth of stories from Apple customers who say they were denied warranty support on their computers because they'd smoked around them.

As an annoying ex-smoker, I can sympathize with a tech who doesn't want to work on a machine that smells like an old ashtray, but that's what painter's masks are for -- I've also serviced machines that reeked of BO and other less savory odors.

This just feels like a way to weasel out of doing warranty service and forcing customers to pay for new machines.

If the company has a policy of not fixing machines if you smoke near them, it should say so when it sells you the warranty: WARNING: IF YOU LIGHT UP NEAR YOUR LAPTOP, WE WON'T EVER FIX IT, EVEN IF IT IS MATERIALLY DEFECTIVE.

Dena set up an appointment at the same Apple store. They told me that they would take pictures of the computer – both inside and out before determining whether to proceed and that if the only problem was the optical drive, they’d probably just replace it. Dena called me earlier this week to deliver the “bad news.” She said that the computer is beyond economical repair due to tar from cigarette smoke! She said the hard drive is about to fail, the optical drive has failed and it isn’t feasible to repair the computer under the warranty. This computer is less than 2 years old! Only one person in my household smokes – one 21 year old college student. She said that I can get it repaired elsewhere at my expense. I asked why my warranty didn’t cover the repair and was told it’s an OSHA violation.

I don't think it's any secret that the chemicals in tobacco smoke permanently damages the optical drive laser diodes vacuum evaporated coated surface.

However, Apple sure likes to take liberty with people... the fervid mac fans!

Moral: read the small print, and if you don't understand it, or don't agree to it, don't buy it.

Don't see a problem with this. The build up of tar on surfaces where people smoke regularly is very difficult to deal with.

It's not the tar IIRC. The soup of chemicals from tobacco actually causes cumulative and irreparable harm to the coating on laser diodes.

I imagine the same goes for the XBOX/Playstation gamers who smoke around them.

EDIT: yes, hat tip to TONA down there, most camera lens assemblies are vacuum coated as well.

interesting to find out how a Hard drive is ABOUT to fail.

PCs have SMART built in, but its not a reluable guide in all cases.

It's interesting how things change. Once upon a time smoking was so prevelant that any item that failed in the presence of cigarette smoke could reasonably be considered to have a design fault. Now it's the smoker, not the design that's the problem.

Bet more than a few of their slaveshop workers in China have a smoking habit...

This isnt about smoking, its about using any excuse to financially rape anyone and everyone.

Perhaps. But laser diode lens' are indeed coated, and tobacco smoke has long been known to react with the coating, rendering it useless.

Might be wrong, but I seem to recall this coming up in cases involving VHS video recorders packing up because the chemicals from the smoke had made their way onto the read/write heads of the machine and the manufacturer or retailer refusing to replace it because it was damaged by the user.

In this respect I can't see that it is any different to the repair centre opening up a machine and finding it has been damaged by water e.g. dropped down the toilet/into the bath and refusing the repair for the same reason.

As a smoker, and a bit of a computer and electronics geek, I am more than happy to see if I can fix anyone's Apple for them.

Just send me them in a parcel and enclose 200 Regal King-Size for my trouble.

Thanks.
