the people who work in IT drive me up the ******ing wall. Someone around me does something aggravating nearly every day, whether expressing an idiotic opinion, exaggerating personal anecdotes, repeating stupid, obvious jokes and phrases over and over and over again, or just parading their anti-personalities around as if there is anything attractive or interesting about them.

I note the author of the article likes to use the word 'mastubatory' in association with the word geek. To me these sort of word pairing always suggests a good deal about a writers own sexual hang ups rather than the mainly rather mild and harmless obsessions of geekdom. Given the masturbation is pretty much a universal activity amongst male human primates and almost as prevalent amongst the females of the species regardless of whether they are geeks or not I would suggest that the author needs to see a psychoanalyst to find out why nearly 50 years after the era of sexual liberation he still feels w*nking is dirty and shameful.

Starbucks still don't appreciate it either.

A (mildly) amusing blog, up to a point, but the blogger has some serious hate issues.

I read it as the blogger not being particularly successful in his support and development career. If he hated it, and the people in it, so much, why didn't he get out of it? Did he lack the same intellectual abilities and social skills as the people he berates?

Frontline support is not inherently creative, and support is not a usual path to being a developer. There are plenty of interesting, well-rounded individuals in IT.

As for idiotic behaviour, quoting memes and TV shows, You can find such people in any walk of life.

"jacking off to anime porn"

Lol. All the hands on IT people I know are either completely wild party animals, or fit into the latter there.

The IT managers are a whole different cup of tea, however.

Hmmm, I had a quick look at the blog. At the bottom of each article is a link 'read more', which takes you to a forum - I won't dignify it by naming it or giving a link to it - that sounds innocuous, but the views expressed by its posters are, shall we say, robust.

Definitely worth a read, just to see what some people believe... but probably not from your workplace, or when your other half/children are about.

+1

It could just be my personality type, but I find it hard to work alongside the same people for prolonged periods of time. The situation becomes a bit like an episode of the Brittas Empire that I can remember (I feel so old sometimes) where Brittas only has to walk into a room for others' stress levels to go through the roof. There are people like that in all walks of life and they don't need to be "geeks"

In IT the most obvious example I can think of in terms of "geek personality clash" comes when you have a choice of two courses of action requiring a compromise to be made somewhere - the "geek" might insist that the only way to do something is to do it "properly" and spend three weeks on it whereas a more business-orientated developer might accept that the "We'll do it like this for now on the 80/20 rule - get the business benefit - and then revisit if needed, and anyway in three weeks the client wil have missed the window of opportunity".

That sort of clash goes on in so many professional roles anyway as those who have different responsibilities protect their "fiefdoms" and there isn't anything that unhealthy about this if the Management or those leading can hold the team together and keep their eye on the ball. The business goals must always take top priority.

In small companies you get a sense of "mucking in together" whereas in large compartmentalised companies where politics are allowed free reign and management is weak you end up with bickering, arguing and a poor atmosphere.

Edit: apostrophe in the wrong place. Because I can be a geek too.

I find that they do, if you ask first. They prefer it if you use the toilet, but outside of peak hours, they're ok with me doing it at my table.

Its not fair, women can breast feed wherever they like but there's no way they'll let you crack one off on their sofas. Hypocrites.
