F*cking mad...

How on earth does someone find £60,000 to buy a virtual property. Makes me laugh quite a lot.

It's an investment in something people value. It's no more ridiculous than buying antiques or stamps. Or oney, for that matter.

The only thing amazing about this is that he found enough mugs willing to pay him money for some virtual snake oil. What law applies in this ethereal internet world? What is to stop the operator of the game taking away your land and giving it to someone else? What if the servers running the game get wiped by a lightning strike/power surge/loss or the company running the virtual universe goes bust?

It's no more ridiculous than buying antiques or stamps.

The vast majority of antiques and issued stamps are other people's unwanted tat, not investments. By all means buy them for sentimental reasons, because you need to send a letter, etc but don't confuse buying goods for consumption with investment (which is very apposite to the house price debate).

The gamer seems to miss the fact that those running the game can create an infinite number of islands just like his, thus rendering his "investment" worthless. Likewise the "resources" that he seeks to exploit can be created or eliminated with the click of a mouse. The same cannot be said for resources in the real world.
