skomer
History repeating.... Didn't they do this in the 1920's? And it ended up with a Police strike in Liverpool (or somewhere like that) and had to send the army in?

Govts never give the people what the people need ie lower prices and liberty. They will tax us to kingdom come, cut our incomes and take away our freedoms. Dorkins
Public sector workers (of which I am one) should be thankful for wage restraint. The alternative is mass layoffs and a huge increase in workload for the survivors. International trade means that British wages are going to equilibrate with those in Eastern Europe/Brazil/Thailand/China eventually. Theirs are going to go up, ours are going to go down. The main reason this would be a problem for an individual is if, for example, said individual had borrowed an enormous amount of money against a rapidly depreciating asset. Dorkins
I assume they are not expecting police personnel to live and work in London on these wages then? It's perfectly possible to live in London on £19k gross, but you will be living in a shared house and will only be able to save a couple of grand a year. It might wake a few coppers up to the realities of the rentier economy they are paid to defend.
ScrewsNutsandBolts
I assume they are not expecting police personnel to live and work in London on these wages then? Article states: Under the PAT proposals police in London get extra payments of £6,615 a year and those in the south east of England up to £2,000 because of higher living costs. Not a problem at the moment, but the way things are going it might be...

Even with the extra, after you take of Tax, NI and Pension contributions, they are going to be lucky if they can rent anything more than a room in a HMO, or maybe a cramped share. The catch is, for a police officer, living in a HMO or a cramped share simply isn't going to work. Basically, the only young people who become police officers will be those living with their parents. saving since 2005
Its pretty high considering all the benefits and you need no qualifications. Free travel for London based ones within 1.5 hours of the center. I think it used to be 32k ish starting for London and that rises automatically after x months to 34kish + all the benefits. BalancedBear
It is still more than security guards get paid when starting out, and not bad given you can enter the police without any qualifications except a fitness test.

Seem to recall someone telling me that - probably a friend whose son is a Met policeman. As I recall his starting salary (non graduate) was pretty good at the time. Biiiiig mistake. They will need to keep the police sweet as civil unrest kicks off. (Actual crime that affects the public isn't an issue other than at election times) Unless of course they are planning to compensate with an even bigger 'Big Brother' surveillance state and encourage citizens to inform on each other to keep the taxpayers in line. disenfranchised
I was held as a witness at the scene of an accident in Wandsworth a couple of years ago - had a chat with a woman in her late 20s who was doing nightshift beat duty as a uniformed special because she wanted to get into the met. Police jobs are so over-subscribed that young wannabe coppers in London have to serve time in the specials to have a hope of getting in. If the forces are all massively over-subscribed for new entrants, paying less makes sound economic sense provided there are enough quality applicants to choose from meeting the recruitment criteria. Met coppers often don't live in London - don't forget that they get beneficial rail travel, overtime - of which they often have many opportunities, on top of their London weighting.
