Si1
http://www.telegraph...ep-it-tidy.html When a retired businessman bought one of Britain’s most important prehistoric monuments as a pension investment,.. But Roger Penny, 73, found himself in court after contractors he asked to "tidy" up a 5,000-year-old earthwork ring filled in historically-important holes with rubble. Mr Penny, a retired plant-hire manager, was found to have caused serious damage to the Somerset monument, known as Priddy Circles, as a judge warned him "significant archaeological information" could have been lost. 200p
The court heard Mr Penny bought a former hunt stables and house as an investment, with adjoining land including the southernmost Priddy Circle. At 73, perhaps it's best to put on those slippers, smoke your pipe and read the Daily Mail each day. Be happy with what you've got rather than continuing to look for those super big projects. Si1
Its strange the things the people in the UK worry about. those that do not heed the lessons of history are destined to repeat them - or something like that so protecting archeology and its evidence DOES have some value in that respect that wasn't my original point - i was just BTL bashing for no particular reason... billfunk
Its strange the things the people in the UK worry about. Maybe if they bothered to do a bit more archeology they wouldn't be starving now, would they? Give a man fish and he will feed himself for a day. Give a man a geo-phys scanner and he can provide for himself and his family for the rest of his life. Because they don't want to live off handouts they just want the opportunity to find wooden postholes of their own. I'm sure you were jesting, but in reality yes. If people in Africa looked at their own history they might realise that most of their problems are caused by them killing each other over tribal feuds, like they have been doing for centuries. Instead they go on blaming the west over the occupation of africa decades ago. They've had time to recover and put their house in order, but THEY choose to keep killing each other. Somewhat simplifies the colonial legacy of grafting the European idea of Nation State onto societies which didn't share European values, perspectives or legal systems. Most of the political units created by the Dutch, British, Portuguese et al in the various treaties paid no regard for ethnic or tribal boundaries, and were accidents waiting to happen. (Even in Europe we have had troubles over centuries with minority/majority ethnic and religious conflicts from Ireland to Bosnia) I agree that African societies will never move forward unless they take responsibility for mending their own problems (as, indeed many are now doing) but the starting conditions they were left with post-war as they moved into independence, added to the corrosive influence of the cold war which led to dicators being either stood up or feted by one side or other, have to bear much responsibility for the killings and corruption across the continent in the second half of the 20th century. As to this nonsense in Priddy these were close to where I used to live and I hope this BTL bandit gets sorely whacked for this.

disenfranchised
The Africans are savages, and not of the noble kind. They have completely failed to follow the great example Europe has set them over the years since we came into contact. I'm sure Hitler and Stalin had nothing on Mugabe? The average woman in many of these countries has 6 kids. Over 4 generations, this leads to an 81 (3*3*3*3) fold increase in population. That sort of population increase was bound to cause problems as their traditional methods of providing food and water dont scale that well. Is this story the plot of a new Indiana Jones movie - where we discover the credit boom was engineered by a bunch of nazi aliens from another dimension?
