Council Tax In Wales To Rise Again 2006

Recommended Posts

Looks like Council taxes in Wales are going to rise for the second year in a row in 2006 ON TOP of the rebanding that also occured this year. Up an average of 4% is the forecast.

So much for being a Labour heartland.

This article on the BBC news site is warning of 10% council tax rises!

10% increase

Could they be allowed to go this high? Even rises at 4% would still be higher than inflation?

It seems that council tax is getting hammered through this housing madness. I live in the Christchurch area in the rich south where council tax is very high and above average. Our band B flat is over £1000 per year already! I read somewhere that the Christchurch area although full of wealthy retired oldies has a lot of poor families on benefits much like Weymouth, which I found surprising. Perhaps this is one of the reasons the council tax is so high here? Before we looked at this flat we saw another which was a 2 bed and had a family of 4 (1 parent family) living there (not a good situation) which is an indicator of the lack of affordable housing round here. The local paper reported that there are 6500 people on a waiting list for flats when they come available in the Poole area alone - madness!

Got to find a way to pay for those "Diversity Co-ordinators" and the like on £135k a year.

See Dog's Tax Abuser of the Week threads for where our money is going.

There was a report out yesterday showing that Swansea is losing about 2.5 million in unpaid council tax. When you add all the BTL landlords who do not pay plus all the students it increasingly looks like a lot of very elderly people on fixed income pensions are being screwed by Labour.

Can't see any way for them to reduce council tax. Too many people not paying it as has been pointed out... as well as the insane jobs.

Something has got to give.

AND can you believe DB hasn't resigned yet?

Oh well, England will be screwed by 10% at least (compounded on previous ~20%, 10%, 7% rises), so at least that's something to cheer up the over-subsided locals in your next of the woods :P

Sarah Beeney was just on the Steve Wright show reviewing the papers and was talking about the Council tax rises... and commented whether "the economy was a pack of cards waiting to collapse".

Steve Wright asked whether he should sell his house now and the reply he got from her was:

"I would!"

"I would!" too, but that's to an entirely different question :P

council tax is now over 1 months take home pay for your tesco worker/street cleaner/ top shop salesperson/mcdonalds worker. And all the other millions in this country that work a ft job in the lower pay scales.

1 MONTH think about that, and thats after already paying tax, and another 10% increase will be another 1/2 weeks more work.

lets face it the CT system is doomed

bring on the roits and the beaten up of the baliffs again.

The same person pays about £2,500 in direct tax and about £1,500 in national insurance.
