deflation
"Retail sales fell 0.4% on a like-for-like basis from the same month last year, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC). Excluding Easter, it was the weakest month since November." too many people watching the Olympics instead of shopping apparently. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-19468578 Edited September 4, 2012 by deflation

zugzwang
Shocking news, once more the Olympics are shown they don't boost a economy.... Damn those tourists. The Boris Johnson Effect. Warn them often enough about potential transport nightmares and they'll go elsewhere instead.

plnouparouvpred
Sunday trading laws in England and Wales have been suspended until the end of the Olympics and Paralympics. The government said being able to open longer on a Sunday would help retailers generate tens of millions of pounds in increased profits. Did somebody from government smell a rat? Ash4781
I understand many shops were running extended opening times during the period (including on Sunday). I imagine that did wonders for profitablity. I remember going in one Sunday and the town was deserted.
billybong
So the worlds largest McDonalds and their decades old burgers menu didn't even boost the economy. Surprise surprise. Edited September 4, 2012 by billybong
plnouparouvpred
Some 45 per cent of the 2,045 adults polled online by YouGov said they supported extended Sunday trading, business law firm DWF said, with 24 per cent believing this could help the economic recovery. We need to stimulate the economy DWF head of retail Hilary Ross said. They call it "taste of Sunday shopping freedom"
plnouparouvpred
Amount that is bought is to do with how much money there is - not how long the shops are open. It is a way how to spin money faster.
