RichM Posted September 3, 2012 Share Posted September 3, 2012 I found it incredibly sad. Osborne is the fall guy, inheriting one of the worst economies - maybe, the worst? - in UK history. People were booing as there's no more free money for them to spend on holidays, HPI and the public sector; I don't believe it's because of some carefully thought out critique of his economy policies. The main mistake the Tories made was in letting people imagine, even for a moment, that they could turn things around in one term, and letting Brown get away with trying to building our economy on MEW and public sector spending. You don;t have to be a ZaNuLab voter to be in despair at the woeful performance of the Tories sinde 2010, the boat anchor of the LimpDem coalition notwithstanding. It's depressing how short term and indulgent the British are being; in fact, it's frightening. Labour in next, then we can see how things go as the depression deepens. Its the reason socialism is so unstoppable in western Europe right now. When nearly everyone with a good job works for the government, they support the most pro-big government party. And try as they might, the Tories are always out spent by Labour. The game only ends when the state runs out of cash. Got to agree what is really pathetic about the Tories is they are never going to win the government vote anyway. So they might as well have cut. The British public tend to have a cynical disregard for their elected leaders. There's no party politics in this. I don't suppose Osbourne cares much. The reality is that no government including thatcher has ever really cut the size of the state as there are so many vested interests within the machinery of government, once you have massively expanded the state its very hard to go backwards, which is why Labours mistakes are so serious. The idea of cutting it back 20-25% in a single parliament was never going to happen. I don't think Osborne has necessarily done a terrible job policy-wise but its just that the presentation has been poor: Two things I would highlight: one - they should have simply called tuition fees a graduate tax, its actually much closer to a tax than a fee as its deducted from your salary and conditional on your income two - The large rises of personal allowance were too difficult to understand for the average person - a 1% cut in income tax across the board would be easily understood and reward all working people TPT Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Day one, 25% of government employees laid off, buildings and equipment sold ASAP... the rest would soon realise their jobs were safe so long as they went along, and even if they tried to get the others back, there'd be nowhere for them to work and nothing for them to work with. When Roosevelt came to power all of the New Deal that got put into place, was done within the first 180 days of his presidency. After that as he tried to put in more reforms, a coalition had formed within the government and congress and the courts which was able to stop further reforms. There is a will to power that a few have, most don't. Exactly as you say the people working for you need to fear for their job.. if they go with you they are safe, if they fight you, it is a career limiting decision. On thing I don't understand is why Britian chooses guys who have no record of accomplishment to lead. To go back to the Roosevelt example, Roosevelt had been the popular governer of New York, the largest and most powerful state in the union.
