Contrasting The Experience Of Different Generations - The Telegraph

Recommended Posts

Guest magnoliawalls

There is an interesting article in today's telegraph contrasting the different experiences of three generations of one family.

It is an unusual solution to a common problem and an example of extraordinary generosity on the part of a young couple's parents.

"Ray was earning £32 a month (£384 a year) as a carpenter in his uncle's building business and Mabs £7.50 a month (£90 a year) working part time at the local grocer's shop. Their mortgage was just less than their total joint annual income"

Wonder how much they paid in tax in them days!?

I stand to be corrected but believe the basic rate was around 30%.

In the early fifties many were awaiting the repayment of their post war tax credits which was a supplementary tax charged during the war years. The average taxpayer had around £150 to be paid back.
