Newcastle House Prices Drop

The party's over for property owners in a North city where house prices have fallen for the first time this year.

A survey by the Halifax shows they have dropped by two per cent in Newcastle . . . the only area in the region to suffer a fall.

Property experts said the reason is that city prices have peaked and people can not afford to buy.

"What we're seeing in Newcastle is a levelling off of prices because affordability is constraining the demand," said Paul Simpson of the Halifax.

"And we're seeing a similar picture in Gateshead where house prices have only risen by 1pc to an average of £119,265."
