Sky News Money.

Profit warnings issued by British companies have hit their highest level since

the September 11 terror attacks in 2001, new figures show.

The figures, assembled by accountants Ernest & Young, show that 46 quoted

companies issued warnings last month.

This is the highest monthly total since November 2001.

For the third quarter as a whole there were 103 such warnings, an increase

of 39% on the year-earlier period.

So far this year there have been 370 warnings from quoted companies, up

from 261 in the first nine months of last year.

Ernest & Young said that, with warnings averaging 92 a quarter over the past

12 months, businesses were clearly finding it hard to forecast in the current

environment.

It said"Though the economy is weaker than a year ago, this contiued high

level of warnings is a real concern."

The increase in profit warnings is blamed on rising cost, particularly for energy,

and weaker-than-expected demand.
